ISIS destruction in Mosul Museum

Post by newcastle »

It's sad to read about, and see on TV, the destruction wreaked by ISIS on the Mosul Museum...although we've known its likely fate ever since they took over the city in 2014.

Palmyra in Syria has also been devastated.

Of course the islamic zealots are not alone in destroying history in the name of religion.

You only have to look at the smashed faces of Hathor at the temple of Dendera and damage elsewhere to see what the early christians' attitude was to "pagan" sites. Widespread destruction of sites throughout the ancient world was carried out by christians at the behest of the emperor Theodosius I around 400AD.

The current battle in Egypt is against the deterioration not only of pharaonic sites, but also islamic architecture...a result of neglect and urbanisation rather than religion-based antipathy. The money simply isn't forthcoming for large scale preservation.
