They go to the army around 20 years of age if the army does not want them they will get their papers to say so, the the army wont call you again, If he just ignored the army when he was younger then the army can come get you at any age, (if he has been in a police station for some problem the police check to see if you have done your army) he probably will get 1 year in the jail for ignoring the army when younger and might be made to finish the rest of the years serving in the army.

But now the army or police would not come to look for anyone who has ignored the army due to the present sitution in Egypt.

Above has told by a few Egyptians who I questioned over the subject.

There are 4 statuses someone could have at the age of 33:

1-Having done army service and being on reserve with the possibility of being called back for active service (I think there may be an 8 year limit for this)
2-Having been granted a permanent exemption previously meaning they were not required to do army service nor can they ever be called for it
3-Having not done army duty due to being abroad/dual citizen but still required to report to army if staying in the country longer than 6 months to get exemption paper
4-Having dodged going for enlistment when they were supposed to go and now subject to arrest if they are found

My husband got extensions up until he was 30, as he was the eldest male from when 13 years of age, when his father died, and became sole provider for the family. :( He was safe until his younger brother had done his stint. After that he got an exemption (after a LOT of papers and a LOT of waiting and, of course money :x ).

So, unless he has a good reason like that, and has followed the correct procedure like my husband, the army can do what they want and definitely will, sooner rather than later, though the revolution may delay things. It's not likely to be good news, and your man would definitely have known that he was doing the wrong thing. They all know exactly how the system works. Sorry. :(

Correct and honest procedures for the army don't involve ANY money...

And in the case of the original poster we seem to have a husband who has told two different stories about his army status, which means the real issue is not the army rules at all but the shifting story.

"Kaaa clunk" which is just a chink being made in the formerly solid shining armour. Bet if you poke about some more you may find lots of rusty spots.

As Glyph says - the 'shifting story' is the real concern. I'd be demanding lots of details, write 'em down and ask again in 6 months to a year. Truth will remain the same, lies will change.

Good luck Kailady, be safe, trust your gut and follow your instincts. Do NOT become a statistic.

Except money for stamps on some of the papers and transport to Qena (this is only a few pounds though)

There is a fee

Post by Claire »

I think there is a fee if you have dual nationality and were abroad so legitimately didn't do military service. Also I thought you did n't have to do it after 30.

I was also of the impression you could be re called to do a stint up to the age of 30 if required.
I think they can catch you at any age if you have avoided going but if you where over 30 this would more than likely involve a stint in a millitary prison rather than time actually in the army.

Is there something about the Army that if you have a passport that has agricultural farmer stamped inside or on the ID card that they are exempt??? just heard a story about this before......The army excuse is usually something to be wary about --- especially the older the guy...my.opinion
Friends are like stars -you dont always see them but they are always there........

Army recruitment is from age 18 to 30 for a period of either 1 to 3 years depending on the education status of the individual.

Once the 1- 3 years have been completed the call back period is then 9 years.

Once the 9 year period has expired there is no call back.

Men married to foreigners with passports of foreign status are usually exempt from service.

haven't read the links provided but just so you know the story of being recalled to the army is a popular scam trying to get money out of you. it may include the line that they can pay to not be recalled etc etc or they need money to survive!! Mostly anyone over the age of 30 is trying to pull a fast one! Just another of the popular excuses to need large sums of money!!All a load of tosh of course!
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
