On the way back from Medinet Habu, I stopped with my guide, at the Africa restaurant on the West Bank. He ordered a meal which I forgot the name of. All I remember was that there were quite a few side dishes...in one there was fish in batter, in another aubergine strips in batter, a plate of rice mixed with noodles etc. He said the fish was called 'balti' or something similar to that. The dip tasted of parsley. Does anyone know what this meal was called?

If you go to Africa, no dish is called anything! If you ask for a menu, the waiter will say "We have fish, meat, chicken or duck" or something like that. The main dish in your case was fish. The other dishers were the side dishes - probably rice, fried aubergines, fries, tahini or babaganough (dips). These side dishes come with the meat, duck or whatever. There are also usually dishes of potatoes and vegetables. It's the normal way of ordering in the small west bank restaurants.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!
