Bacon/Pork Substitiutes
This is probably pushing my luck, but... Some of my favourite recipes, and some great new ones I have seen recently, all involve these ingredients, which I cannot use for my (Muslim) husband. Is there something else available in Luxor other non-Muslim cooks use?

There's no substitute! Nothing could be better than a bacon sandwich for breakfast - unless it is the full English!
However, you can get an almost acceptable substitute in Arkwright's - I've tried it - and their beef bacon is very good.
I'm wondering if you could substitute chicken for pork in your recipes.

I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

For a full English breakfast I use the smoked chicken slices. Whilst it cooks it even smells like bacon! The smoked breast of turkey is good too. I also use the tinned luncheon meats in cooking, you can get the meat, chicken or turkey. Great for a quick shawarma, (not sure on the spelling!). There is a sausage made in Egypt, you sometimes see them for sale in Luxor or if you are adventurous I have a recipe that is very easy.

Mrs Z had some turkey slices left.
I gave them a go, dropped them in the frying pan and then into a couple of slices of Warburtons thick bread.
With a little imagination and some HP sauce, you know, it did almost taste like bacon.
The only bit of a pig you cant eat is the "oink"
I learned that off a 3 year old kid

You've got my mouth watering too soon! I'd trained myself to consign bacon sarnies to the far reaches of my mind until my next visit. But only two weeks to go, then down to Cafe Mimmo in Teddington (Jordanian owner who cooks delicious back bacon rashers even if he won't eat them himself!) to claim my (former) usual table.LivinginLuxor wrote:Nothing could be better than a bacon sandwich for breakfast

They serve 'Beef Bacon' for breakfast in the hotels.....Now there's a conflict in terms? Doesn't taste a but like bacon or beef come to that...thin dried leather perhaps
There is no substitute, and when we visit, one item that must go in the case is a couple of packs for a very good west bank friend.

Last year, before the swine flu hoax, you could get a respectable bacon & eggs or a bacon sandwich at Oasis restaurant. It was more like thinly sliced gammon. I think they got it from the pork butcher near the soukh, which is probably out of business now. With a high proportion of Christians living in and around Luxor, there really should be no problem in providing pork.

I totally forgot about those ! Doh !! :doh:PRchick wrote:I use turkey bacon and turkey sausage when I need those things and they are delicious. I almost never buy bacon except I do buy bacon bits at times to put in omelets.
The Bernard Mathews ones tasted very nice... Problem solved on the sausage front..
Well not sure it would work for British Z as our bacon is very different from yours. Think yours is more like what we call Candaian bacon, which is close to ham. But Turkey sausage can hold its own. Yum.
