Growing Tomatoes

Post by LovelyLadyLux »

Anybody aware of companion plantings for tomatoes? What else takes about the same growing requirements as tomato plants?

Marigolds [calundula] grown around them help keep them bug free and attract the pollinators. All "salad" crops can be timed to coincide with cropping.

I tend to grow slugs with my tomatoes, but they are not friendly, so I have to plant slug pellets as well.

Basil is a useful companion though, as it needs a similar large amount of watering.

BrianY I too am growing tons of slugs! ;) They just love all my plants.

I never thought about marigolds but on looking them up tonight I see they're a bit of a natural bug repellant. Will give 'em a try, have grown them before and I do know that my pet slugs have loved nipping them off first night they're out in the garden.

To stop your slugs and snails, surround the plants with a line of sawdust.

A circle of sheet copper [like the old fashioned draft excluder they used to put round doors] smeared with vick vapour rub on the top edge works too [ there is a chemical reaction between their mucus and the copper that gives them an electric type shock!]. Small/deep bowls of beer at soil level works brilliantly [they get drunk, can't get out and drown!].
