BrianY I too am growing tons of slugs! They just love all my plants.
I never thought about marigolds but on looking them up tonight I see they're a bit of a natural bug repellant. Will give 'em a try, have grown them before and I do know that my pet slugs have loved nipping them off first night they're out in the garden.
A circle of sheet copper [like the old fashioned draft excluder they used to put round doors] smeared with vick vapour rub on the top edge works too [ there is a chemical reaction between their mucus and the copper that gives them an electric type shock!]. Small/deep bowls of beer at soil level works brilliantly [they get drunk, can't get out and drown!].
