U2 in Glasgow

Post by Bullet Magnet »

I lived in the West End of Glasgow for three years. A Great place, and REALLY Great people. I loved their humor, rebellious nature and openness to other people.

Anyhow, that's me laying the foundations for this...

U2 were playing a concert in Glasgow, and Bono came onto the stage to rapturous applause, and he told the audience to be quiet !

The Kelvin hall fell silent as he walked across the stage from left to right, then right to left. Clapping his hands every 3 seconds.
Then, he went centre stage and said.

"Every time I Clap my hands, A child dies in Africa"..

Then a guy from the audience calls out in the ensuing silence that followed.

"Stop clapping your hands then, You Evil B@stard ! ! ! "

Get it ??? :cg

Typical Glasgow humour BM.Strange thing is that we would have regarded it as a logical retort.Such are the Glaswegians!lol!!!

My old dad (86years young!)relates the tale of the day that those "well known, internationally renowned comedians/variety men/showmen known as Mike and Bernie Winters (anyone remember them?)appeared at "Greens Playhouse or Glasgow Empire(can't remember which one now!)
Mike came on stage and was quickly "dying a death!"The crowd was less than appreciative of his humour. It was decided that the ace card woud be played...so Bernie joined him on stage.
The shout went up from a more discerning member of the audience.

"my God...there's two of them!!!"

I doubt they were in Glasgow, I just made it up.. Maybe they did ? Who knows, ;)

I was just imagining how Bono would have gone down in Glasgow.

I lived on Parkgrove terrace, on the corner by the park.. I cant stand city life, BUT I loved it there.. :up
All that beautiful countryside nearby as well..
Great Place Glasgow and Scotland in general.... Cold as Hell mind.. :urm:

I lived near Dunvegan on Skye for many years and experiencing 80MPH winds during the winter was incredible, the Glen was a great place to live, wake up in te morning to dear in your back garden, seals playing and being inquisitive in Loch Pooltiel, it was lovely.

There's beautiful song by Corries (in my opinion, the finest folk duo ever to have come from Scotland)called "Massacre of Glencoe."
Lyrics are wonderful and music is quite haunting.
Their cd is first one to go on "after the bells"every year in my home, and they also do a lot of humourous stuff,e.g parody of "Scotland the Brave" "The Portree Kid" "La di da di dum."
I really wanted to send youtube clip to Luxor for the St Andrews nite celebration...but unfortunately my technophobia took hold and it all got too complex!!
So BM...if you really want to make an "auld women"happy...find a few clips and post them.lol!!!

Cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
And covers the grave O' Donald,
Cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house of MacDonald.

They came in the night
When our men were asleep
This Band of Argyles through snow thick and deep
We wined them we dined them
They ate off our meat
And then Slaughtered the House of Mac
Donald.

Brilliant tune about the slaughter of the MacDonalds of Glencoe at the hands of the Cambell's

The lead to Glencoe passes through Rannoch Moor one of the last wilderness's in the World, many the time passed this way through a Scottish Mist at 3 am hoping the car did not break down ;)
