That's terrible news.

I recall having my hair washed and cut one summer at the hairdresser in the Etap hotel whilst sitting and chatting to one of these 2 ladies. It's over 10 years ago now but it was a lovely experience to sit and share some of her stories.

That was always a fabulous house too. Such a shame.

It's very sad to hear how Egypt is being turned around on its' head.

Michele,

Egypt is now so far away....

The trouble is when you find the culprits it takes 3-4 years to get things to Court, or lets put it this way it does if you are European

For Who2 - Hashemite Jordan only established after 1919 with carve up of the Ottomans - but it does look older than 1981.

Post talks a lot about demolition but don't understand what would be benefits of this/who would benefit. Were there demolition plans to the straighten roads/build new hot concrete plazas?

Strange that reports don't mention any objects missing/ransaking.

There's not much architecture of this period left in Upper Egypt and even in Cairo a lot of it has been left to fall down whilst huge Aga Khan and other grants are readily available for Islamic architecture. Its interesting that rivers of money can be found for some things in Cairo or Alex but not much outside.

An Egypt based web site covering, in a lot of detail, the architecture of period from 1870 to 1939 in Egypt is: http://www.egy.com/

The tone is decidedly nostalgic and its author seems to have known many of the big families. Its a mine of detail (a lot of it personal), good photographs and information of the pillage of Egypt under the English. I've looked and haven't found anything better on the architecture of this period.

Occasionally, when I Google it, there is a warning that the site could 'damage your computer' - don't understand this/doesn't always show up and my down loads over time have not caused problems and Norton has not picked up anything.

"Were there demolition plans to the straighten roads/build new hot concrete plazas?"

I was told, a few years ago, that the treasury of Luxor Temple had not yet been discovered and that archaeologists fancied that it lay beneath one of the two palaces which were then still there. Seeing as it (seemingly) wasn't found when the NDP building was demolished, I suppose that they're hoping to find it when this one is knocked down.

"Strange that reports don't mention any objects missing/ransaking."

Although it's only hearsay; I was told that only a ring was taken from one of the poor lady's fingers. This, if true, opens up the way for any amount more of rumours regarding the motive behind this horrendous crime.

If you want to help, there is a campaign to save the house:

Apart from any historical significance of the house, it is worth saving as a memorial to the ladies who did not deserved to have such a frightening, tragic end to their lives.

Here is the excuse for demolishing a 120 year old Luxor icon, a few old pots, 'probably planted.
Dig up my garden you'll probably find the same..... 8)
