Laptops in Luxor

Post by Winged Isis »

I am thinking of buying one to leave there to save having to bring mine each time; even a notebook weighs a whole kilo, and there are the risks of damage and theft in transit. I would want a good, but not top-of-the-line brand/model, so which would you recommend? It would mainly be used it for basic internet access like emails, Skype, music, movies, buying ebooks etc. What price could I expect to pay? Would an Egyptian get it cheaper? Where to shop?

You missed the "Not Expensive" criteria Dear Doctor.. :urm:

I bought my wife one of those Fondle slabs as I call them, for Christmas.

Its the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 , Android, so you wont be forking out for the app's every 5 minutes.
Camera, music, internet, e-mail, sat nav, maps, video, book reader, and about a million other uses including a remote control for the TV.
( she hasn't discovered that feature yet, and cant figure out why the TV keeps muting all by itself) . ;) It will come to her...eventually
Dead esy to use, and she's getting about 4 days out of the battery between recharges.
Very light, and you can buy a protective case for about 30 UK Pounds.
Yes, I even bough her that as well. :ct

I had an Apple Mini IPad for a Christmas present, absolutely brilliant, would fit in a ladies handbag nicely, light, and excellent screen resolution mine is the cellular version so you can use a SIM and get internet anywhere in the world. Incidently the photos and video's it takes are amazing, and with the WI Fi facility you can sync it to your laptop or PC and download everything easy.

My biggest problem was the same problem I had with my Kindle, YOU HAVE TO REGISTER THEM WITH A UK ADDRESS ETC. If not you will only get half the products available. Most Apps like IBooks, will just say not available in your country if you do not do this.

Regarding buying a laptop in Egypt! they do not come with Windows installed in Egypt so the seller will no doubt put on a pirated copy for you that just causes frustration, and to be honest you should be able to get them cheaper on Oz than in Egypt. The cheaper models are Letvano. available from most Luxor computer shops, but not sure how reliable they are, all the components are from China the same place that supplies Dell so they should be on par.

I would never but another computer from Luxor again, mine has been nothing but trouble, and I think a lot is down to the pirate windows they use. My laptop was 6000le 2.5 years ago

I had to buy a new laptop about eight months ago. I chose a Toshiba as I had had my old one for seven years with out a problem. The new one cost just under 3,000Le from a local computer shop. I am convinced that it is a copy. Lots of problems with it, no soft wear. It just doesn't feel like the real thing so I'm going to have a genuine one brought out for me this year and dump this one in the Nile. You just can't feel safe buying anything in this country. They should re-name it The Undemocratic Egyptian Republic Of China.

I treated myself to an iPad after failing to get on with an android tablet - absolutely brilliant piece of technology! Very, very easy to use, lightweight and fits in an average size handbag, with a big enough screen to watch TV and films. Love it, love it, love it!

Having said that, I played with a fellow members mini iPad - you know who you are! - yesterday and am seriously thinking about buying one instead of a Paperwhite Kindle. iPads may be more expensive than many tablets but, like everything in life, you get what you pay for!

I got a new computer last year from the computer shop run by Christians up one of the streets near omar supermarket (I think 2 streets away from Luxor Digital computer shop). I choose the case, motherboard, amount of memory, graphics card etc so it would be a very good spec, then they put it together for me) It come to around 2,000LE (I did not need a monitor), ive never had a problem with it. My computer rating on windows 7 is 6.7 out of a possible 7.9 which is excellent :D

Thanks, everyone.

@ W2: I have always used Apple as I learnt what little I know about computers when the Department of Education first installed them in schools, and they were then all Macs. Being the non-techxpert you all know and adore, I have stuck with that which I am comfortable. All my laptops have been Macs except the notebook I use in Egypt, because Apple didn't make them then.

@ BM, CE and Y: I want a full-size laptop. I don't need it to fit in my handbag as does my notebook, as I don't want to travel with it, as I said. I get very sick and tired on having to scroll up and down all the time because of the small screen. I have tried typing on a tablet and don't like them (partly due to the length of my fingernails, though they are not talons by any means).

@ CE: Well, you've certainly changed your tune re your tablet! So glad you are now happy with it; so must be your lovely daughter.

@ Keefy, can that be done with a laptop? If so, I am going to have to get down on my knees and beg you to do the same for me, so I don't end up like poor D! My needs are VERY basic. I will pay you... SERIOUSLY! :-)

That's OK for the likes of you Keefy that know about these things but when you are as thick as two short planks concerning such things its a bit difficult. If some one started to spout on about a mother board to me in a shop I would of smacked him one thinking he was being a bit personal.

Im a programmer not a computer expert Dusak, I just told him my needs, like I do extensive graphic work etc and he showed me some products with the various prices he also explained which would best serve my needs, and this did not turn out to be the most expensive of the picks he did, all prices were clealy marked on the box too.

That's for a desktop PC though, WI wants something mobile. I would just buy a netbook this will cover what you require (from what I read in your post) you probably get a new one from 1500le+ depending on what make it is.

A friend of mine has just bought a brand new laptop for 2200LE - Windows 7 included (although it might be a counterfeit version). I'd advise you to look at www.e3050.com and check prices and specifications - there are other online suppliers in Cairo (souq.com, nefsak.com) and they all deliver to Luxor business addresses. You could even order one online, and have it delivered to your hotel, or a restaurant that you know or trust.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

It will more than likely be Counterfeit L in L, every time I have had my laptop rebuilt it always comes back with a counterfeit Windows even though they swear blind its an original, but you cannot fool Microsoft they are well on top of the situation and withing a month they will be sending you annoying glitches to annoy you and interrupt what you are working on, 5 times during Ripper Street last night came up You may be the Victim of Counterfeiting. Its been like that now since last November but where I take it does not open the same hours I am open

WI, if you want a genuine laptop then the best place to buy is Btech on Station Street. It'll come fully sealed in its box with an international guarantee. You can view the prices and selection on their website here: http://www.btech.com.eg/
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...
