Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
The state news agency says a farmer in southern Egypt has been arrested after putting the military chief's name and an army-style cap on his donkey while riding it through town.
MENA news agency said that Omar Abul-Magd was arrested late Friday in Qena province for allegedly insulting General Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, who ousted president Mohamed Morsi after mass protests against the unpopular leader.
Since Morsi's ouster, authorities have cracked down on critics of the powerful military.
Earlier this week, a military court ordered five pro-Morsi protesters to serve up to three years in prison for chanting against the army. Three were tried in absentia.

Re: Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
I suppose it's same as the teddy bear story many years ago.. I have asked many Egyptians what do you call your donkey, the answer is always "donkey" apparently it's an insult (Haram) to name an animal anything similar to a persons name.

Whole new topic here DJ Keefy!DJKeefy wrote:I suppose it's same as the teddy bear story many years ago.. I have asked many Egyptians what do you call your donkey, the answer is always "donkey" apparently it's an insult (Haram) to name an animal anything similar to a persons name.
What names do you give to your animals?
Do you call them by a persons name(ridiculous!)or do you give them "pet"name?
How do you decide what to call them?
My cats through the years were called Smokey,Brandy and Whisky.(Is there pattern emerging here?)Family dog, springer spaniel came to us with name Shirley, which was quickly replaced by Sherry. My mum hated animals having human names!
A friend of mine had cat named "Paisley!"
No..she didn't get it from breeder in Paisley.Every time Ian Paisley appeared on telly with his ranting and raving, the cat went nuts!
Clever animal!

Re: the donkey and teddy bear namings - I find it interested that the verbalized word is given such high importance. Does it really matter if one names a donkey or not yet the over the top reactions that happen if one names 'something' with a persons name. Bet the reaction wouldn't be the same if the Farmer had named his donkey John or Henry or Mary or even Obama, Merkl or QueenE.
On the topic of pet names my girlfriend has a Shih Tzu dog. He was aptly names Sir Shitz A lot (cause he did). If the shoe fits........

Far too many "prudes"in Luxor extolling the beauty and culture of Minh and Bez to win that argument!
Cos,they're just little meaningless figures aren't they?
Proclaiming that it's all disgusting, whilst getting their toenails cut, feet massaged and offering up their buttocks up to any Tom,**** or Harry wielding a syringe and hypodermic needle!

Re: Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
I would have thought that being a medical person, ST would not have found Min and Bes pornographic. Min, the god of fertility was worshipped even in pre-dynastic times, and Bes was a protective deity " worshipped as a protector of households, and in particular, of mothers and children and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad". Again his cult went back to the Old Kingdom.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

Re: Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
Our farmer in Qena also paraded Sisi in public with an army hat. Hope the hat reflected the rank.
The Army are a sensitive lot.
A South African paper quoting AFP:

Seems like harmless fun treated harshly.
On the other hand the new constitution drafting body states that the current Morsi laws against journalists for criticizing politicians should be lessened to make it a civil offense. Plays well in the west. Seems like a generous policy made risk free by closing any media you don’t like.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/09/ ... F120130922
Seems like double standards. Big Cairo papers are relatively free whilst some poor Muhammad in the sticks might go to jail for his donkey business. Could start a fashion for donkeys, goats, sheep, cattle and camels. Limitless possibilities for dissenting animals.
Why is it that army dictatorships always lack a sense of humor?
Permissible dissent doesn't extend to al Jazeera or an Egyptian Islamist. The arrested al Jazeera journalist is to be held without charge for a further 45 days, his foreign colleagues expelled, their office closed down and at least 3 Egyptian Islamist TV stations closed. At this rate the only media left will be those supporting the government which sort of means you won’t need any laws because they won’t be printing anything bad as far as the army is concerned.
It could end up being a completely free press if all the opposition is closed.

It's just the crazy world we live in. Folk can have sex with a donkey here [friends and I witnessed it with a cow once] but don't even consider putting a hat on one.

Didn't the headmistress of the teddy bear school move to Luxor and had plans to open a new private school this year? Whatever happened to that plan?

Re: Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
Is there a new school opening this year Glyph? where is that?. Whats the Teddybear thing about? i must have missed out on these items, but a new school would be welcome. Anything new and to do with education will be good for Luxor, there needs to be better education and a chance of it.

Re: Egyptian arrested for naming donkey after general
Google Teddy Bear and Sudan.
The headmaster of the school at the time of the incident subsequently bought a house (perhaps Who is talking about the same woman) in Luxor and now plans to open a British school there. From what I have been able to ascertain, the woman in question was fired at the Sudanese school and then set up a blog accusing the board of all sorts of corruption. Of course, she kept this corruption under wraps until they fired her. Ask yourself if you want someone like that opening a school in Luxor.
