An American friend visited yesterday Mary, she's an egyptologist she brings americans via Macho Pitcho to here.
She arrived for some local chat and bought with her a west coast photo journalist, Eric who proceeded to run around the house snapping pictures shouting 'Oh my gawd! We chatted and drank. She usually meets the 'Cat in the Hat in Cairo as she did this time, she knows I have a personnel interest in his welfare. Well she never mentioned this little incident to me. Biting him in the arse again....... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 09454.html\

It is also this man alone who has prevented the such likes as the B.B.C. from making any recent archaeology programs, which automatically sell throughout the world.
Just after the lecture in Luxor to celebrate the completion of the making of the Carter, Belzoni, Champollion program, an off the cuff remark made to me, by one of its makers, was that the programs were massively over budget, and it would be a long time before the B.B.C. would be back in Egypt.
I checked this comment out when I returned to the U.K., that Spring,.............apparently they had paid through the nose for everything.
Well, he certainly has a big ego, is a very shrewd politician, and a polarizing figure, you have to admit two things: he is very pro-Egyptian ("uh, are you guys in Europe done with looking over our artifacts? You've had them for hundred years; we'd like them back"), and he has excellent archaeology credentials. I was surprised to see read a book from 2003, before he was famous, and his field work spans back to the 1970s.
I am an experienced traveler, but a newbie to the Middle East.
It cost the BBC £8 million but, they had sold it Worldwide before completion for £32 million and are probably still making money from it so not a bad deal methinks..

You do realize he doesn't write those books himself, don't you? He comes up with the outlines in very basic and poor uneducated English and then someone else has to make them into what they are.
My colleague Eric Vasallo and I Enjoyed a very upbeat meeting with Dr Zahi Hawass in his Mohandisseen office, Cairo, He spoke of his upcoming lecture tours to Europe and US, ongoing archaeological work in Egypt and his new publications. Despite rumors to the contrary, he is very involved in current archaeological projects, as well as , promoting tourism to Egypt.
