Upper Egypt-bound train traffic resumes.
Train traffic resumed on today (Saturday) between Cairo and Upper Egypt for the first time since 14 August, which was suspended following dispersal of the Muslim Brotherhood sit-ins in Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda squares.
Train no.978 headed from Cairo heading to Assiut. The rest of trains will move according to operation schedule.
Hussein Zakariya, head of the railways authority, announced last week security services approval to operate 14 trains on Saturday between Cairo and Upper Egypt.
Zakariya added that trains will move on Saturday from Cairo, while trains heading from Aswan to Cairo will resume on Sunday.
Security services had earlier requested suspending train traffic in August. In October, resumption of Delta train traffic was approved.

The Cairo/Aswan train that was scheduled to arrive
in Luxor at 6pm today met gunfire, so I'm informed, in
Beni Suef and returned to Cairo.

Wonder if they hosed out the loo during the down time.
Getting met with gunfire sure isn't good though and from my own experience of riding that train it definitely couldn't outrun a jamoosa on a good day so have no idea how it could escape gunfire. Almost like sitting ducks if you were on the train.

The officials gave vague safety upgrades as the reason but one of the papers is reporting it was shot at as it came into the station in Minya.

Technical problems halt trains to Upper Egypt again.
Rail services to Upper Egypt stopped indefinitely after briefly resuming Saturday.
Egypt's railway authority (ERA) halted operations from Cairo to Upper Egypt hours after they were resumed Saturday.
According to a statement issued by the ERA, train services have been halted indefinitely due to technical issues in certain destinations between Cairo and Upper Egypt's Aswan, which cannot be fixed immediately.
The ERA has called on passengers to return their tickets for a refund or keep them for future use.
Trains to Upper Egypt initially resumed on Saturday after a 100-day stoppage.
Train services in and out of Cairo were halted mid-August after widespread unrest following the bloody dispersal of two pro-Morsi camps in Cairo and Giza.
In October, 28 services between the capital and the Mediterranean city of Alexandria were resumed.
Under normal conditions, Egypt's railway service transports around 500 million passengers annually, at a rate of 1.4 million per day, according to the Railway Authority's website.

Re: Upper Egypt-bound train traffic resumes.
I cannot honestly say my days of travelling the train from Cairo to Aswan has many pleasant memories even when dreaming of Laurence blowing-up a total 0f 78 miles of the Hejaz Railway line…..

Cairo-Upper Egypt trains partially back on track.
After a crippling months-long halt, railway services connecting Cairo to Upper Egypt partially resumed again Wednesday, state news agency MENA reported.
An earlier attempt last week to resume railway services between Cairo and Upper Egypt was thwarted hours later due to security concerns.
Trains connecting the capital to Alexandria were partially restored in October, with a current 42 passenger journeys now operational between Cairo and the Mediterranean.
The Wednesday resumption brings 14 journeys back on track, out of a total of over 1000 daily trips, a Railway Authority media advisor told Ahram Online.
The resumed journeys to Upper Egypt raise the number of functioning trains to 56, out of a total 188 services between Cairo and nationwide destinations. The official added that complete restoration of the services remains on hold.
The move, however, is expected to gradually ease the crisis, as the long-term closure of the Egyptian National Railways – the first in recent years – has largely hampered internal travelling across Egypt.
Under ordinary conditions, Egypt's trains transport an estimated 500 million passengers annually at a rate of 1.4 million per day, according to the National Railway Authority website.
Train services to and from Cairo were suspended mid-August as a result of the widespread unrest that followed a violent crackdown by security forces on Islamist protest camps, which left hundreds dead.
The Railway Authority has also incurred LE4 million in daily losses as a result, an Egyptian authority official said in October.
