Now, if you hadn't heard before "A FAIRY TALE IN NEW YORK" and were woken up in the early hours of Christmas morning to some drunken tramp with skanky teeth shouting about "old sluts on junk" you'd call the police or throw an old boot out the window at them. Instead, someone somewhere went to an old folk's home, found the most incoherent man , spinned him around, put a condom on his tongue and with a stun gun, forced him to recite inane childhood nursery rhymes and crappy cliches about Irish drunks and the auld country, while gargling with whiskey and potato pie. Thus, the unforgettable sound of Shane McGowan was born, along with a little Christmassy singalong of exquisite taste and rare beauty, which has afflicted us ever since. . He then added an atrocious cacophony of flute,mouth organ, fiddle and bagpipes played by chimps and created The Pogues. I'd rather poke forks in my ears than hear that dreadful wailing lamentation. In fact, I hate it so much that once I cried in a club toilet when they played it at Midnight on New Years eve
