A good book.

Post by Scottishtourist »

What do you look for in a book?
What qualifies something as a "good read?"

Do you enjoy humour?Autobiographies?Historical novels?Non-fiction?etc,etc.

In past few years there seems to have been a "glut"of tales of misery!
Think it started with "Angela's Ashes!"
A tale of misery and woe based in Dublin!

I tend to steer clear of these kinda novels.I really don't want to read about poverty and deprivation!
I want something that entertains me,something humourous, and nothing too "heavy."
Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP) ticked all the right boxes for me.

What's your preference with regard to literature?

I prefer reading Biographies, autobiographies and mysteries but do read most anything.

"Gifted Hands" by Ben Carson was my latest read. Interesting story however a black ghetto kid rose to become one of, if not THE leading world neurosurgeon. He also just announced last week he is going to join the run for President of the USA. Definitely an interesting personality to follow.

My big sis just loves historical novels!
They bore the pants off me!

She often buys one at Gatwick and reads it in Luxor.
Lately,I have discovered another author.John Irving.I watched the film "The Cider House Rules"where Michael Caine played the part of the ether addicted, syphillictic doctor..and it enthralled me so much that I just had to read the book!

So..for Luxor this time,my novel of choice is "A Prayer for Owen Meany"by the same author.
His books are just wonderful!

I think you'll enjoy Owen Meany ST. We once once had an extract about the Nativity Play read from it at one of our Christmas Book clubs and we all had hilarious tears of laughter rolling down our faces. Think about us when you get to that bit.

What do I look for in a book? Usually page one. :D Science fantasy is my personal choice and has been since the age of ten. I enjoy the pure escapism.

Sinse I got my kindle, I have become more open to reading any genre of book, as I just download the top 20 free books and work through them. If I particularly enjoy one, I will search the author and buy more of their work. My preference is crime novels, but I will have a read of anything. When relaxing in Luxor, I can do a book a day so I make sure the kindle is well loaded before I set off
