The New Suez Canal
Is it me...?
I have no idea how long it took to dig out and prepare, test and then open the original Suez Canal. (OK, I'm lazy and not searched for the information either.) It does seem to me however, that the new Suez Canal has been built extremely quickly and put into use, albeit trial, already. Is such a feat of engineering really possible in such a short time? For some reason I have felt very uncomfortable about the project and it's safety, but other than the speed at which it all seems to have taken place I have no other knowledge about it.
What are your thoughts?

Re: The New Suez Canal
Don't actually think it is a new Suez canal, Hepzibah, just a widening in some parts to allow two way traffic to navigate more easily.
Having said that someone will probably correct me.

Re: The New Suez Canal
Some interesting points regarding the Canal, but did hear many thousands of it's workers died constructing it..

Re: The New Suez Canal
Egypt holds trial run on second Suez Canal
25 July 2015From the section Middle East
The exercise was closely monitored by helicopters and naval vessels
The first cargo ships have passed through Egypt's second Suez Canal, amid tight security, ahead of the new waterway's official opening next month.
Construction on the new lane, which runs alongside part of the existing canal, started less than a year ago.
The 72km (44 mile) route allows two-way traffic and can accommodate larger vessels.
Several container ships from around the world successfully navigated it on Saturday as part of a trial run.
Helicopters and naval vessels escorted the ships as part of the security operation.
The Sinai Peninsula, which borders the canal, is a base for Islamic militants, who have killed hundreds of people since the military overthrew President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
Trade boost
The original Suez Canal opened almost 150 years ago and links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi says the expansion of one of the world's busiest shipping routes will boost trade and increase employment across the country.
It currently handles 7% of global sea-borne business, and is one of Egypt's main sources of foreign currency income.
Suez Canal project
$8.5bn
raised for canal expansion project
$13.2bn
projected revenue by 2023 (up from $5.3bn)
72km of new channel and bypasses
97 ships a day by 2023 (up from 49)
11-hour southbound transit (down from 18)
12 months to complete project by Aug 2015
Source: Suez Canal AuthorityAFPWork on the second waterway is estimated to have cost about $8.5bn (£5.4bn) and is being carried out by the army around the clock.
It will be formally inaugurated on 6 August - one year after construction started - meeting an ambitious target set out by Mr Sisi.
The project has been labelled "a rebirth" for Egypt by the head of the Suez Canal Authority, Adm Mohab Mameesh.
Officials say the new waterway will be a symbol of the new Egypt
But it does have its critics. Some experts are dubious about the revenue projections and believe the money should have been spent elsewhere.
"It's a patriotic project first of all, and that's very difficult to quantify," Cairo-based investment analyst Angus Blair told the BBC.
On Saturday, Adm Mameesh also revealed plans to build another canal near East Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea.
It is expected to cost around $60m and will be 9.5km (6 miles) long, Reuters reports.

Re: The New Suez Canal
I know nothing specific about the NEW Suez Canal but that definitely seems record time. The second Panama Canal has been taking years and years but maybe comparing it to the New Suez Canal is like comparing apples and oranges.
As a piece of trivia when I sailed through the Panama Canal went to a lecture and it was stated there that is costs $700,000.00 to send a cruise ship THROUGH the canal one way.

Re: The New Suez Canal
It has to be considered an achievement to have built the "new" canal, and on time.
That's if you believe the blurb put out by the government
As to the financial forecasts - so much pie in the sky already rubbished by sea trade cognoscenti.
Egypt suffers from a lack of credibility when it comes to mega projects.
Maybe this one will be different. Who knows?

Re: The New Suez Canal
As Newcastle here suggests, this is not really a full scale new canal as many think, especially those wealthy Egyptians who were persuaded to hand over their American dollars to invest in this project. Anyone who studies the plan of this "new" canal will realise it is certainly not the great engineering feat of our age.newcastle wrote: "new"
As to the return on outlay of money, as projected, I am sorry to say that this all mostly depends on the price of crude oil, which is priced at less than $50 per barrel today. However, should that price rise to $70 per barrel, then it is at that point that shale gas in the U.S. then becomes profitable to produce once again, and the transportation of Middle Eastern oil through the Suez will not be necessary. At the moment, more that 60% of movement through the Suez, both North and South is oil based.
We should also understand that the world is round, and that new super powers for trade is in the Pacific. As I have written on here before, the world is changing, and very fast, what we call Western Europe today will be come the new Middle East, and the now Middle East may quickly return to the Dark Ages.
There is also the realisation that the so called North West Passage may soon become possible for almost six months of the year, and if so will certainly reduce profits not only to the Suez but also the Panama.

Re: The New Suez Canal
May I suggest that you was either tripping, as in stoned out of your box, or drunk during this lecture. There is no way a ship going through either the Suez or the Panama is charged that price. I suspect a cruise ship pays approx $70,000, where giant oil tanker will pay $60,000.LovelyLadyLux wrote:

At least 20,000 ship pass though both these canals each year.

The North West and North East passages offer great potential, but not to those on Mercator's projection. Then a thousand men could remove a thousand tonnes of earth a day, now, with heavy machinery ten men could do the same. Earth 'chewers' work 24/7, day in day out requiring no rest with kilometer long conveyor belts removing it continuously.

Another article that is easier to read from the link:
7 Ways Egypt Will Celebrate The New Suez Canal
Although there have been many invitations sent out, to world leaders and others, I don't know if any have been sent to anyone in Luxor. One can only hope that, should any of the particularly busy world statesmen choose to attend, the inaugural event will take place, at the right time and in the right place. One of the events to celebrate the opening of the New Suez Canal is a record breaking attempt - yes Guinness Book of Records - for the longest flag. A picture is shown of it rolled up but there is no comment about what it will be transformed into after the event. (I have no doubt some here could provide some suggestions. )

Re: The New Suez Canal
We learn today through the Chinese media that shipping under its flag are to be 'encouraged' to use the North West Passage via the Arctic Ocean. It seems that China has increased interest in the area around Greenland, and has already set up a free trade agreement with Iceland.A-Four wrote: There is also the realisation that the so called North West Passage may soon become possible for almost six months of the year, and if so will certainly reduce profits not only to the Suez but also the Panama.
The shorter journey from Shanghai to Hamburg cuts 2,800 nautical miles off the distance instead of travelling through the, these days, rather expensive 'new' Suez Canal. Last September the Chinese Navy successfully sent several of its ship through the Passage for the first time.
Since the opening of the 'new' Suez Canal, revenue has significantly declined from previous years. The government of Egypt has recently set up an inquiry as to why this is so,........Hmmm.

They really need to look no further than to what all the experts, forecasters were telling them with regard to the prospects for shipping.
But then, was the decision to develop the canal reslly much to do with increasing revenues?
