V.A.T - Egyptian Style.
it seems that the Egyptian authorities are finally getting their act together with regards to the implication of the new V.A.T., they say in the first year it will raise $5 Billion, and it will be vigorously enforced, they are even entering retailers into a sort of lottery to encourage them to comply with the law.
What will this mean for Luxor?
Well, compared to the rest of the country, Luxor's idea of giving some one a receipt of purchase has always been a very difficult thing to obtain from most retailers in that town. A big reason in the distant past was when ever you bought a radio, television, electric kettle, etc, one would often find that such items were in some way damaged, and where retailers in most of the rest of the country would not allow them to be sold they ended up in Luxor and sold without receipt, therefore non returnable,......seems this practice will soon come to an end.
The Government are to encourage every one to obtain a receipt for all purchases, with the idea that this, and only this will guarantee that the product purchase is safe. It has also been suggested that national T.V. will show adverts to this effect. The real reason of course is that all retailers must declare the V.A.T. through their accountants, and no room for fiddle.
The Government has now finally got their system in place, and along with the long awaited reduction in oil subsidies are, at last, to be introduced within the next few weeks.

No matter what I buy here, if I require a receipt I just ask for one and it is given. As to whether it also acts as a guarantee of quality is another matter altogether.

Re: V.A.T - Egyptian Style.
I am just a little curious as to how this will effect the present day tourist to Egypt, from when this new taxation law comes into effect. Will it increase hotel prices, food etc, and if I book a holiday before the legislation is passed will I avoid this new tax?
I am certain that the ex-pats will already be aware as to how these additions costs will effect them, though I am unaware how it will add any additional cost to, I, a humble tourist.
Any help in this matter will be totally appreciated.

It will not affect the hotel pricing system in my opinion, as when it does kick in, all the hotels will be closed.A-Four wrote:I am just a little curious as to how this will effect the present day tourist to Egypt, from when this new taxation law comes into effect. The Isis is now closed and I have heard that the Hilton is to close shortly so looks as though you may be right D.
It may be a new way to attract tourists, book a hotel in Luxor and see if your lucky maybe your hotel will be open when you get here. New type of adventure holiday.

Well, it seems you are right about the Isis Carrie, but it appears, according to the major hotel site I use they are still taking bookings up to next month, though I'm sure you would agree that means nothing.
Eighteen months ago I came across a quite elderly couple who arrived at around 11-30p.m. to discover that although they had booked the Isis, it was closed, then got another taxi to take them up the road to Sonesta St George, where they paid through the nose for their stay.
Never thought I would see the day when you would have to worry as to whether, a once international hotel, would still be there or not.
Soon Carrie I'm sure many of us will be paying you commission to check these things out for us prior to our arrival.

Don't take commission for anything A Four but more than glad to check things out for people. Some time ago the Isis did a big push on renting out apartments on a time share basis, I wonder if they did get any clients and what happens now they have closed.
I looked on Travel Rep and you can still book the hotel on there, yet it is definitely closed.

Travel Republic is offering New Winter Palace, but at a much higher rate than Old Winter Palace.carrie wrote: I looked on Travel Rep and you can still book the hotel on there, yet it is definitely closed.

I do not for one moment doubt your findings here Carrie, but even the Isis Hotel's own Pyramisa owners website are still taking bookings for their Luxor Isis Hotel next Monday for a two week stay at $630, for a single room, and were quite willing to take my debit card details. As far as I know Isis hotel has no alternative accommodation in Luxor.carrie wrote:Don't take commission for anything A Four but more than glad to check things out for people. I am certainly sure that you would not seek any commission Carrie, but with so many of the regulars seeking 'on the spot' immediate knowledge, it could quite easy become a full time job for you.

When recently I was looking on the Internet for a local builder to do some work on my London flat, 90% had gone out of business when contacted, I never go though those 0800 number, being that you know you're paying commissions to a contact agent.BENNU wrote:Travel Republic is offering New Winter Palace, but at a much higher rate than Old Winter Palace.carrie wrote: I looked on Travel Rep and you can still book the hotel on there, yet it is definitely closed.
At least the old yellow pages was updated each year or so. In the end I got one, like in the old days, though the local rag,............so much for the Internet.

Re: V.A.T - Egyptian Style.
When we were on our last holiday here, staying at this hotel, they were offering purchase of one of three so called penthouse apartments on the block that projects outwards towards the Nile. The cost was around £70,000. For this ridicules amount you only had five weeks for personnel use. You were not allowed to find your own renters as the hotel insisted on doing all this on your behalf. They guaranteed a 4/5% annual return on your investment. I often wonder if we had gone ahead and bought one of these, would I now be still solvent or a bankrupted part owner of an abandoned hotel today liable for a percentage of the monies owed.carrie wrote:Don't take commission for anything A Four but more than glad to check things out for people.
