Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
BBC World News is showing a 3 part documentary on Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak.
Can't find the schedule at the moment, but they are running adverts for it now. Sounds like it might be interesting.
One to watch out for.

Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Sounds like a good one.....but not seeing any signs of it here......
Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Appears this series emanates from Doha.....so expect an anti-Egypt slant
http://sales.arte.tv/fiche/3932/PHARAON ... DERNE__LES_
Some confusion over when it will appear on BBC World News...maybe 23 Jan..maybe 30 Jan
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/n27vnmlk/episodes/guide
Not shown in Africa.....so maybe not in Egypt either?
The Doha production was certainly not seen in Egypt.......
"Territories : Worldwide (except Egypt, Algeria and South Africa).
ALL EPISODES FROM THE SERIES
SADAT
MUBARAK
NASSER ( 52 )
PROGRAM SUGGESTIONS"

Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Perhaps they don't want to show how 'men with good intentions, all turn into megalomaniacs.
It's a common enough thing, just check out the World's history....

According to BBC World Africa schedule, it's on at 11.10am & 10.10pm on Saturday.
Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Very interesting programme. ...repeated tonight at 20.10.
First impressions :
Concentrated on rise of military rule, the secret police and the disastrous confrontation with Israel....little mention of the transformation of the lives (if not immediately, then prospectively ) of the populace.
Left me with an overriding sense of deja vu.

Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
I think if you ask any Egyptian man over the age of 65, who was the best president of Egypt, they will always point you towards Nasser, however the moment you mention the name Muhammad Naguib, that old man will smile at you, and perhaps say 'Ah you know Egypt'.
Naguib was always the reluctant soldier and leader. He believed in true democracy, where after any revolution the army returns to barracks, and the people decide the nations future, a some what recent idea that was resurrected In Egypt, though yet again, quickly put back to sleep.
When Naguib became Egypt's first President, Nasser became prime minister who did not appreciate the President's ideas of democracy. Nasser engineered his removal, and was placed under house arrest, where he remained until Sadat came to power, when he was then released. Naguib wrote a very interesting book of his life that I remember reading many years ago.
Although I have not seen these programs by the B.B.C., I gather they do not include Muhammud Naguib although he was the first president, he was certainly no Pharaoh (the living image of God), but then again would those living in Egypt today agree that there is still a dynasty of pharaohs from one 'family' ?

Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Hotbird would appear to be a subscription satellite. As I don't have a satellite dish I don't use it. I need to get something on the Internet.carrie wrote:Don't know what your VPN is Brian but I don't subscribe to anything just get it an normal on Hotbird.
Re: Egypt's Modern Pharaohs
Hotbird is free.
Without a satellite receiver your only hope is something like youtube. ...if it turns up there.
