Je ne regrette rien

Post by newcastle »

Death is something that will come to us all, but it's a subject we tend to avoid. Dwelling on dying is considered morbid. It's perhaps one of the last great taboos.

Bronnie Ware is an Australian nurse who spent several years working in palliative care, caring for patients in the last 12 weeks of their lives. She recorded their dying epiphanies in a blog called Inspiration and Chai, which gathered so much attention that she put her observations into a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.

Ware writes of the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom. "When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently," she says, "common themes surfaced again and again."

Here are the top five regrets of the dying, as witnessed by Ware:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

2. I wish I hadn't worked so hard.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

What's your greatest regret so far, and what will you set out to achieve or change before you die?

(In case you're wondering.....no, I haven't been having a bad day  )

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention.......

Oh do shut up Frank :stp :vs

In the 1990's I suppose I'd reached the peak of my career when the tech revolution took off. Computers, the internet, all that stuff you see on programmes like the BBC's "Click". And, as a mathematician, it should have been child's play to keep abreast. But an army of assistants and secretaries...and, yes, sheer laziness.....meant I sat back, put my head in the sand and ignored it all.

Now I find I can't even open my grandkids' iphones...and no way would I buy one of my own. I'd be too embarrassed to ask how it works. I'd love to muck about with photoshop (perhaps humanity's been spared on that front!) or experience augmented reality. Engage in cyber games (is that the right expression?). Who's this Pokemon guy I keep hearing about?

It's all beyond me now. Along with short term memory, my attention span for learning new tricks is shot to pieces.

I'm not entirely sure what I've missed/am missing.....but it nags at me in moments of reflection. To preserve an aura of competence, I've become quite skilled in faking my abilities and hiding my ignorance.

If I ever reach the state of total vegetation in a nursing home, I only hope I can muster enough nous to switch off the life support gadgetry

Most adults don't ask questions because they're afraid to seem stupid. But the most stupid questions are the ones you DONT ask! Nuff said! :D

Thinking back quite a few due either, to thoughtlessness, selfishness or just plain laziness. But the major decisions in my life, Je ne regretted rein, my kids of whom I am extremely proud and love dearly, my work, my decision to come and live here, yes my only regret is that I could have been kinder along the way.

You should check out some of the back issues over on the Gold side, some time back I ran a small tuition group on there for anyone who fancied dabbling in that sort of thing. I even found them a free program that they could download that was very similar to Photoshop and then went through everything from the basics up including step by step tutorials, those who joined in became very proficient and no one was a spring chicken. ;)

For some reason, those forums won't recognise my name and password (I assume I use the same as here). It was a problem which Keefy cured a while back...but it's reappeared.

Nobody wants to play with me over there :a7:

Newcastle try this link to the free software page thread:
http://www.egypt4u.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2369

This covered the basic stuff:
http://www.egypt4u.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2378

This thread covered it in more detail with people discussing their problems or progress together:
http://www.egypt4u.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=2379

As to using your same name and password over on the other sites, well it may work depending upon how you first set them up, but why not just join again on that site?

Thank you Horus.

I'll have a look at those links....and I'll think about joining, or rejoining, the Gold side.

My only regret is not learning to relent. (Thank God)

If you did decide to get the basic understanding from reading those tutorials and playing around with the free software, then you will find that the bog standard packages available nowadays such as Photoshop ‘Elements’ which are fairly cheap to buy will fit the bill nicely. Owning even the most basic versions of ‘Elements’ will keep you happy for years just messing about with your images as these packages do so much and take the difficulty out of the task at hand with simple interactive menus. You can of course use them in a more professional mode once you know your way around them a bit better.

Here is a CD that you can buy for GIMP from Amazon for £2.99! but it can be downloaded for free.

The latest version for 2018 is only £86 from Amazon

But you can do just as well with a lower version such as Version 11 (probably more difficult to source nowadays)

Or say version14 available at £54
