Branagh's Death on the Nile

Post by HEPZIBAH »

According to Egyptian Streets, the go ahead has been given for Kenneth Branah's latest Agatha Christie adaptation to be filmed in Egypt.

'Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, the sequel to his 2017 box office hit Murder on the Orient Express, has finally been cleared for production, Den of Geek reports. Filming is already underway at Longcross Studios outside London and on location in Egypt, according to the magazine, and is slated for release in October 2020.

The film is adapted from Agatha Christie’s 1937 novel of the same name and will see Branagh reprise his role as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Death on the Nile is set in 1930s Egypt, aboard the Karnak, a luxury cruise ship, and follows the beloved detective on another murder mystery when a passenger, heiress and socialite Linnet Ridgeway Doyle (Gal Gadot), is killed during the voyage.

In addition to Gadot and Branagh, who will also be directing and producing the film, Death on the Nile will also star Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, Oscar nominee Annette Bening, Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Ali Fazal, Armie Hammer, Sophie Okonedo, and British comedian Russel Brand.

This is the second film adaption of Christie’s popular crime mystery novel, the first being the 1978 John Guillermin-directed Death on the Nile, starring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, and Maggie Smith.

The 1978 adaptation was shot in different places across Egypt, including the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan, where scenes from the novel are set. Christie herself is rumored to have been a frequent visitor of the legendary establishment.'

Let’s hope they don’t repeat some of the ludicrous scenes in the previous movie....hopping from Karnak to Abu Simbel in a few hours...an impossible journey by boat in any case at the time the film is set (1934)

With the exorbitant charges levied for filming in Egypt I imagine they’ll keep on location shots to a minimum.

Not sure how well it’ll go down....the murderer being as well known as that in The Mousetrap! And the cast hardly matches the glitterati of the 1978 version. Still, if you haven’t seen It before......... 8)

I would imagine they will use a lot of cinematography tricks as they did in Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express. I found it a bit too much of a Branagh fest so it will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

I’m sure with modern techniques, CGI etc they could, using stock film of Egypt, keep the actual on location work of the actors to a minimum.

The Agatha Christie adaptation will star Gal Gadot, #GameOfThrones' Rose Leslie, and #BlackPanther’s Letitia Wright.

The names mean nothing to me....but Gal Gadot is Israeli

Needless to say....Egyptian social media is already talking about a boycott!

Israeli indeed.....shock...horror ... :xx

I've no idea who any of these people are. I've heard of Kenneth Branagh, but I'm not a signed up member of his fan club.

Really??

“....to develop a plan to train the university youth to accompany the team and coordination with tour guides to organize tour programs within Luxor, to and flights Of”

God help them!

“Filming the film in Luxor will also be a practical message that confirms the safety of the Egyptian tourist destination ....”

Perhaps they should change the title then.....”Death on the Nile” sounds a tad ominous :tk
