Words of Wisdom

Post by HEPZIBAH »

As you move through life, you begin to realise the wisdom of things that are said to you, perhaps, in your more formative years. I am often reminded of being told not to rely on someone who is always telling you how busy they are, but instead look to a person who often is obviously busy yet still achieves and finds time for you. Over the years I've learnt this to be true in others, and at times in myself.

What words of wisdom have you found helpful, or learnt to be true over the years?

I was talking to a friend earlier and we discussed the subject of the clearly busy person and the one that says they are busy. They have since sent me the following poem.

The Busy Man
by Anonymous

If you want to get a favor done
by some obliging friend,
And want a promise, safe and sure,
on which you may depend,

Don't go to him who always has
much leisure time to plan,
If you want your favor done,
just ask the busy man

The man with leisure never has
a moment he can spare,
He's always "putting off" until
his friends are in despair

But he whose every waking hour
is crowded full of work
Forgets the art of wasting time,
he cannot stop to shirk

So when you want a favor done,
and want it right away,
Got to the man who constantly
works twenty hours a day

He'll find a moment somewhere,
that has no other use
And help you, while the idle man
is framing an excuse.
Image Experience is not what happens to you;
it is what you do with what happens to you.

Avid readers of this forum - not the usual barflies - will recall that I addressed this very topic several times in the past. Most recently, if I remember correctly, on 25th June 2018 at 10.43pm .

As I said then , and have frequently repeated ever since, I intend to gather more data on the subject and consult with my wide range of friends in Egypt in order to apprise those less cognisant of the subject with my unique insight.
.
Unfortunately, I am very busy at the moment but - rest assured - I will return to the topic when time permits.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you are now well on the mend. Being unwell is bad enough at any time, but probably more difficult at this present time. Take care.

The word 'busy', and the concept of it, is still buzzing around in my head at the moment. I decided I'd look into it more for the purpose of writing project I have lined up. Of course, there are plenty of quotes on the subject, and without spending more than a couple of minutes (so far) the following two stood out and interested me.

'Busy doesn't mean better. I have never envied a busy person the one who likes to point out their busy lives to others.'
Donna Lynn Hope (author)

'I am so busy doing nothing that the idea of doing anything which as you know, always leads to something cuts into the nothing and then forces me to have to drop everything.'
Jerry Seinfeld (comedian and actor)

I must admit, that the later quote I can identify with, especially during the early days of the Covid-19 lock-down in the UK. The couple of weeks leading up to it had been so stressful (and very busy) at work, that once the lock-down came, armed with a very long list of things I would do, I fell into a 'busy doing nothing' mode. Six months later, my to do list is no shorter, but I have managed to tick a fair few items off it, even if I've also added more.

I was reading an essay earlier and came upon this sentence which I quote.
'A busy life is filled with tremendous emptiness.'
I'm not sure I fully agree with the statement, but it fitted the character saying it, and the character being alluded to.
