EGYPT
British anti-racism protestors call for destruction of Giza Pyramids

British anti-racism protestors called for the destruction of Egypt’s Giza Pyramids on Sunday, after tearing down a statue of a slave trader in the city of Bristol and throwing it in the Avon river, CNN reported Monday.

The pyramids have been among the most frequently discussed topics in the UK over the past several hours, inspired by controversy over who built them.

Protesters tore down the statue of British slave trader Edward Colston on the second day of protests condemning racism in the UK, part of a response to the killing of George Floyd, an African American man, by a white policeman in the city of Minneapolis, USA.

Colston was responsible for the enslavement and transfer of more than 80,000 people from Africa to the New World in the 17th Century, while working with the Royal African Company, according to CNN.

Some then called for the destruction of the Egyptian pyramids in Giza, claiming that they were also built by slaves.

The controversy surrounding the pyramids prompted Twitter users to begin sharing a news article published in the UK media 10 years ago.

The article features an announcement by the Egyptian government, on January 11, 2010, of the discovery of the tombs of laborers who constructed the pyramids more than 4,000 years ago.

At the time of the announcement, archaeologists said that the discovery supported evidence that the people who built the pyramids were not slaves, but rather were paid laborers.

The laborers’ tombs, which were built of mud during the Fourth Pharaonic Dynasty, contained jars of beer and bread for the next life.

At the time, head of the excavating team Zahi Hawass said the discovery showed that the pyramid builders were paid workers, not slaves.

Hawass added that, “These tombs were built next to the pyramid of the king, which indicates that these people were not slaves in any way.”

As the debate in Britain over the demolition of the pyramids raged, foreign archaeologists published a slide depicting records written by the pyramids’ builders, which confirmed that the pyramids were not built by slaves.

UK Home Secretary Priti Patel told SkyNews that toppling the statue of Colston in Bristol was “utterly disgraceful” and “a distraction from the cause in which people are protesting about.”

Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that anti-racism protests in his country were “subverted by thuggery.”

Far worse than using slaves was - according to Herodotus - Khufu prostituting his daughter to raise funds for the construction of his pyramid.

Enough to send the Women’s Rights movement into paroxysms of outrage.

This is the power of scripture and Hollywood. Scripture tells of the Hebrews being in captivity for four hundred years then under leadership of Moses set off to find the promised land. Moses was not on a promise as he was denied the chance to enter the land of milk and honey. So the Hebrew people were not in captivity at the Pyramid period. The scenes of the slaves at the beginning of 'The Ten Commandments' and their construction of what would become Pi-Rameses could leave people to imagine everything of worth was built by slaves. Another great film is 'The Land of the Pharaohs.' Putting aside its historic innacuracies in referring to Khufu as Pharaoh and calling Waset Luxor, it is a film which is well researched. It shows officials going through the nation recruiting labourers. There are also slaves featured in the film, however the only ones who have anything to do with building the pyramid is the architect who designed the locking system and his son who was overseer. Documentaries have shown the film to be accurate in regards to sourcing labour. The film shows they dis their research when in one scene where the architect was looking for three plans for the labyrinth, one was the actual plan used.

If the pyramids had built the pyramids it makes no sense to tear them down. Whether free men or slave the Pyramids stand as a marvel of achievement. A statue is of one Slave trader so no great loss. It is a ridiculous suggestion. Can you imagine the carnage if Egyptians were mad enough to try. What would they even use? Explosives. Some people say things just for the fame.

In times past in our own history before slavery, can we really say that the labourers were paid their worth or did they feel no better than slaves. With no worker rights and protests easily quashed were they any better than slaves?

What next, burn books depicting slavery?

One only has to wander around old Cairo to spot all the outer casing stones used in their houses.... 8)

The great earthquake of 1303 AD loosened much of the casing which was carted off for Cairo’s mosques and palaces.

Mohammed Ali also took a lot for his Alabaster Mosque in 19th century.

:xx Slavery is alive and well, across the globe, in C21. As are many other socisl injustices.
Perhaps those who want to tear down and destroy every statue, building, records, etc., of those that are now perceived 'bad', should turn their attention and energies to the issues facing today's society.
I'm not suggesting past wrongs should be forgotton, but I do think we need to focus more on the present and try to improve the future.
