Scarborough and Moslems

Post by hatusu »

I feel a small involvement in this news for 2 reasons, No 1 because thanks to my family who live there, I am lucky enough to be able to spend several months every summer in this beautiful seaside town and NO 2 because the rest of the year I live in a small Moslem village . First of all a bit about Scarborough – it’s a small town of 61,000 with no big industries there. I love walking, and know just about every street and coastal path in the town, and on my everyday walks I will very rarely see a brown or black face (Im not prejudiced against either, Im just telling you what its like.) There are more than 20 Christian churches in the township (all seem to be a different denomination) but not a single mosque.
Now I followed the news about the Afghan tragedy closely, but was a little surprised in view of the above information that the town was chosen as a suitable venue for 250 Moslem refugees. And now the trouble starts – my sister is a friend of one of the hoteliers who has taken some of the Afghanis in, and she is very unhappy about it. She has already started to have staff leave because of the way they were spoken to and treated by some of the Afghanis(and jobs are not easy to find in this town after the main summer holidays) Why could they not have been housed in areas where there was reasonable sized Moslem population already where they would feel more comfortable? Still, once a Scarborough winter sets in they may want to move of their own free will!

I understand that the placement of Afghans in Scarborough is a temporary measure. As you know, the UK government had to move very quickly and probably took whatever accommodation was available. I imagine Scarborough, with winter approaching, probably had a few vacancies. ...and the Afghans will be moved to more suitable accommodation, and in a more suitable area, as soon as possible.

I can imagine the ease with which friction could arise with an influx of extremely stressed migrants, having abandoned everything and , perhaps, not fluent in English.

I would hope that the residents of Scarborough made appropriate allowance for any temporary disruption. Indeed, I understand that Scarborough made significant contribution to aid appeals. But there’s always a few without any Christian spirit.

Apparently there was some posting of hate circulars and a bomb hoax which required the evacuation of one of the hotels hosting the Afghans.
