Thanks Fran - we like to hear your update. Tell me, I'm not sure, but I think we hear a lot of fox noises here in the evenings, but the sound is really scary, rather like somebody being murdered.

[face=Comic Sans MS]Have you got owls nearby? They can make some alarming sounds when they're on the hunt. Not the gentle 'twoo wit twoo', but some times a screeching and at othertimes an altogether different sound that could be somewhat frightening if you were a bit jumpy. I understand that rabbits also make a loud squeeling sound once they have been cought as prey for fox or bird of prey.[/face]

Thank you all, next installment then

We've seen 3 cubs now! The original big male, a smaller darker male, the only sone I ever had a clear image of (he was chocolate as a small cub & I "saw" his face very clearly) recognised him instantly, slightly wide eyes, mentally called him Blackie even though he isn't :urm:
A very pretty little female, very Missie like but with quite a lot of white on her.
I think Kinnie is starting to realise they are from the same family now, although they tend to come down on their own or with a sibling.
None of the problems we had with DB last year, Mum had already said they were much easier to look after. We saw & heard 2 talking quietly to each other in the garden last night and they seem to share food OK.
She has decided it is time for lessons now. 3 nights ago she stopped coming down early for food to take back & said she was teaching them to catch bugs etc. Funny how they suddenly turned up here for food wasn't it?
We asked her if we should stop putting it out but she said "No, foraging is a good skill too, and they will learn to hunt as well. Besides it is a good reward after a lesson" :)
Will try to get Barry to edit some pictures of them to post soon.

Phantom as Hepzi says it may well be owls. Foxes have a sound like a cross between a cat & a dog (the pitch of a cat or a baby crying, but normally in short sharp yaps like a dog). It can sound pretty unearthly though. :worry:

Hmm, I'll have to get the Q's to listen out for it. Somebody told me it was foxes having sex? Maybe that's just an old wives tale, I don't know.

[face=Comic Sans MS]If that's the case I must be living in a Fox hole.
I occasionaly have a fox here but I have so many rabbitts this season I am sure there is no fox nearby this season. I certainly hear the noises though, whatever makes them. :) [/face]

Only just seen this Fran how wonderful to be seeing the cubs. Will you bring a DVD with you in July to the meeting?

I still have the vixen Lady visiting but alas no cubs and we have not seen a dog fox in months.

Foxy questions

Post by FABlux »

I went away for a couple of days and last night Mum said
"Where are you? You're away"
"Yes I went to see some gardens (Gardeners World Exhibition in Birmingham) but too difficult to explain, although I did try to show her some images"
Mum "Oh OK. That's strange. Human females go away and the males stay, in Foxes the males go away and the females stay"
Missie "MALES GO AWAY? Will Tufty go away, Why :( "
Mum "Males go in the summer, after the cubs get independent and then come back later"
Missie "I haven't got cubs, will Tufty go? I don't want him to go, I like him being around & I like sex"
F "That was obvious last night"
Missie " Sorry forgot we weren't meant to be noisy in the garden  "
F "Mum I don't know the answer to this one, I'm going to sleep"

Just tried to ask Mum what was said later but she was in the garden and can't talk easily there. She needs to monitor the cubs whilst she's not near them

Trix we can send you a DVD of recent action via Dawn on the 22nd if you can play that.

A recent picture to show how all the animals get on together. One of our hedgehogs feeding while a cub comes down for a nibble with Kinnie cat looking on from the side of the pond! Cub and Kinnie are about 1M apart in this picture.

Fantastic picture, Tipsy just came and I had forgotton the food so just rushed some outside for her. I felt so guilty. She has been coming for several nights now and we have not seen lady this week so I am wondering where she is, is it too late to have found a dog fox this season. Still hoping we get some cubs one-day.

Sue In theory I think it's too late but you never know. Missie doesn't seem to think so
Mum got pregnant last Aug/September I think it was, although she lost them, so maybe they only have successful pregnancies at the right time of the year to give the cubs the best start in life? But if they pair up now they could have a head start for next winter. :)

Have finally seen the 5th cub clearly. A very distinct white tip to the tail, bigger than average, looks about 3" long. We think its 2 females & 3 males but can't be certain. I'm only expecting 5, that was the impression I always had, so any more would be a surprise :oo
