I knew you were joking when you said about the movie mode but serious with his camera I CAN take a bizzillion photos and I'm taking way way way too many cause I even get bogged down trying to edit them out.
I think I'm doing this in the hopes of catching the "PERFECT" photo as in quantity vs quality and am thinking I have to slow down, take more time, aim and shoot with some of the different elements in mind (rule of thirds etc etc etc). I really have gone 'hog wild' and got myself so many photos it was too much "WERK" going through and actually deleting and trying to figure out which is the best then making it even MORE perfect!
On another note - Gee Grandad that soulds super spiffy if all you have to do is push a button on the D5000 and you've got a movie. WOW! Technology is amazing. Is there a wire or summen that lets you watch your movies on the telly?
Watching my own photos on the !!!!WIDE SCREEN!!!! (of the telly) would be fab but dunna have a clue how to do that.

Probably just as well too cause then I could really sit and critic, muse, mull and analyze what I'm doing or not doing!
By the by - I also got the monopod and with just that much steadying the camera it makes a world of difference. Just a cheapy cause was not too sure how much I'd use it but now that I'm seeing crisper photos I have a feeling I'm going to using it LOTS!

I seldom use the video function on any cameras because I have never been keen on video. The quick action on my camera is useful but the downside is that you have to switch to manual focus and follow the subject and constantly focus.....won't be bothering with that very much.
I can buy an extra HDMI lead for HD images but am not in any hurry to get one. At present I can connect direct to the TV with USB.
I often use a monopod. At least it supports the weight of the camera and is easier to carry around than a tripod.
We plan to go to Sissinghurst Castle in Kent on Monday so I shall definitely take the tripod. Lovely gardens and interesting old building. The former home of Vita Sackville West and her husband Sir Harold Nicholson both of whom had, shall we say, interesting lives.

Grandad, I assume that your Camera HDMI output is for one of those mini-HDMI sized cables that converts to full sized-HDMI at the other end to plug into your TV?
Now I am also assuming that you already have one of those and you are talking about buying 'full size' HDMI leads. If so give Aldi a try, a few weeks back I bought a pack containing two X 2 metre long leads for only £4.99

They are excellent quality, I use one for out-putting my laptop via the LCD TV.

Yes you are correct Horus, the camera has a mini HDMI output socket. I will look in at Aldi tomorrow to see if they have any left.
Thanks for the tip.

All gone quiet on the photo threads just lately????
I have been getting to grips with the new camera and am slowly finding my way around all the menus. Aldi had sold all the HDMI leads Horus but I got one on ebay for £3 delivered

I am truly amazed at the quality of the playback from the Nikon D5000 on a 1080, 100 hz TV. I always regarded the movie function on digital cameras as just an add-on but I have now had to change that view.

It is near HD quality.
I mentioned earlier that we were going to Sissinghurst Castle on Monday. There is very little of the original Tudor castle left, just the tower plus various small cottages all set in beautiful Kentish countryside. It's main appeal today is to gardening enthusiasts who come from all over the world to see the renowned white garden and other garden 'rooms'. It is the most visited garden in the UK and the number of visitors there on Monday would support this. All with their little note books.
As usual I went home with over 100 pictures and decided not to post any here but have put a very small selection on a web album if you would like to have a look.

Grandad your pics are so beautiful , its difficult to say a favourite cause I love pics of old buildings but I do like the last 3 No's 10, 11 & 12 in your album particulary the white rose.

Really lovely pictures Grandad, particularly liked the portrait one of the cottage

It looks like you had a great day out
Just a quick reminder to anyone interested, I noted in todays newspaper that 'Aldi' have that excellent camera tripod on sale again at under £12, its a snip if you do not already have one and it is identical to the German Hamsa one that costs around £50

Thanks for your comments folks.....I only add the pictures for the interest of those who may not know my part of the world. Much like all you other snappers who post from your home areas.....
I too like the pink rose LLL and I think it might find its way into next months open competition on The Digital Site. Why not have a look and perhaps join to look in at a wider forum of photographers at:
http://www.thedigitalsite.co.uk/forum/main.php
I do occasionally post an entry in their monthly comps and have two in this month.

Lovely pictures Kiya

I would say that the pink in your pictures is definately there, probably the sunset reflecting something in the colour spectrum off that particular cloud. I love the spiral cloud

very unusual, I have never seen that in the sky before, who knows you may just be due for a tornado
Edit: after having a closer look, the pink may be lens flare

Beautiful pictures Kiya

And like Horus I really like that spiral cloud formation. I think you do find pink in some clouds at sunset (and maybe sunrise but I am never up that early

)
Probably to do with the altitude, water content and relative angle to the setting sun.....as Horus said, a spectrum thing.........
BTW, you are obviously getting to grips with that nice new Canon

PICS with CANON

That duck is a Mallard Kiya

he is the male, the female is a dull brown in colour

Now if you got to grips with photo editing you could make a nice additional picture on it's own of the duck

Cormorants they are Kiya

Yes I think I may be able to help you there

I am sure that his name is Eric and he has a brother called Cyril.
Sorry Kiya, I couldn't help myself
