Call me old fashioned if you must but may I be the first to say that I have no admiration for those who choose crime to provide themselves with a better standard of living than they could otherwise afford. The GTR's are no more deserving of admiration than the Luxor motorbike muggers. Would I buy a book by one of them to help him provide for his old age? Not on your nelly!

Well said.

I also agree with those who say there is NO such thing as a Victim-less crime. Whether any one was physically hurt or not, no doubt the repercusions would have had an effect on someome. There are also the financial implications to consider too... no doubt the railway had to pay higher insurance premiums, pay for increased security in the future etc. Not to mention the costs of all the Police and court time etc. And who ends up paying ultimately - We do - those of us who had no direct connection with something we heard on the news have actually become, in a small way, victims of that same crime.

Why the perportrators of crimes such as the Great Train Robbery end up becoming some sort of folkloric heros' is beyond me.

Beats working for the system as a living though, ladies . . 8)

Work 'till you are fit to drop to gain a measly pension that wouldn't keep a sparrow alive.

My Dear departed Grandad fought in WW2 as a M.P. for 8 years straight in Egypt, did not see his family in all that time.
Came home, missed an opportunity to join Scotland Yard as a detective by six weeks, so worked for Mackintosh's the rest of his working life, retired at 65, DEAD at 66 !!

All he had to show for it was a gold plated clock I have somewhere in my attic.

So, that may be all well and good for the masses, however, Rob a train, live a life of ease with your loved ones, let the GPO make an exaggerated claim from their insurance company. . Everyone is a winner. . Job Done.. 8)

The "Luxor" mugger was a coward, NO ONE in their right minds could defend his actions. . Do not tar the GTR's with the same brush as scum like him.

I have no qualms about stealing from Banks and the like, they are the biggest bunch of crooks around, educate yourself on how they work with the fractional reserve lending scheme, see how they generate money from fresh air, and also own the insurance companies that they claim from for bad debt..
Want to know why your car / home / life insurance is so expensive ?? Nothing to do with motor claims thats for sure...

Thieving politicians with their hand caught in the till, banks that stole all our money to bail them out of their own mess they created with their greed and the Ponzi scheme that is still set to bankrupt the country.
WE are paying for their mistakes alright, the full effects have not hit home yet, just that these legal crooks have the law on their side, because they are "legitimate thieves" THEY are the backbone and masters of our "system". THEY control all the puppets you vote for every 4 years.
System is in control from the day you are born, no escape, unless you want to get one over on the system, which the GTR's managed to do.

The double standards astound me ! Everyone is happy to be robbed blind by the ******* from Eaton, but take offence at the Great train robbers who hurt no one. . .

A cosh, a lump of wood or whatever can be a weapon - as can a professional boxer's fist outside the ring. 8)
It appears that Jack Mills who bare in mind was in his late 50's was attacked by a gang member using an AXe handle. After he was attacked he was made to drive the train by another member under the promise he would not be attacked again.

BM, Beryl has explained, in full, why the GTR was not a victimless crime. Any "inflated claim" to the insurance company will have been passed on in full to you and me. Is there a difference between the GTR and the bankers who robbed all of us? No. Neither should be regarded as folk heroes. If your grandfather had apprehended them in his role as Military Police he would have locked them up. Several different wrongs will never make a right.

Interesting, but when I searched for a little something for those "Up-close-and-personal" moments in your life..

Sorry, no items matching 'cosh' were found.
* Try using less specific keywords, for example try 'something' rather than 'something more specific'.
( WTF ??? )

The only "crime" related item I could find was..

Golf Umbrella "Crook" Handle for £105.00 !!

It looks a bit outwardly gay to me though.. You'd be beaten to within an inch of your life if you walked around here with one of those . . 8)

In the days when nobility carried cosh's, only the finest cosh would do, they hold two Royal Appointments, Harrods doesn't, So probably the queen Mum RIP probably had a cosh and probably made by Swaine Adney Brigg and they probably went the way of the sword stick, these days it's converted 'brococks the cheapest choice of the footpad......8)

...And here it is on my desk...

This is going to take longer to read than I anticipated.
414 Pages ! Someone had a lot of time on their ha... Oh Yes, of course.. 8)

After reading the Introduction, I can see now why crime has moved on the way it has, and why they all carry guns these days.!
30 years per man was indeed a draconian tariff for an unarmed robbery. . .

Finally finished.. An excellent read.

The book really does raise some very interesting questions, and has answered a few for me too.

I caught a few minutes of a Channel 5 documentary a few days ago, regarding "The Ulsterman".
Nothing too much of interest in it to be quite honest, but the film clips and news reels from the day took my breath away.

I know TV is a great hypnotic tool to keep the masses from atually thinking, but **** me ! It was nothing short of blatant back then..

Jack Mills with more bandages on his head that of TutAnkAmoun's entire body, and he was quite clearly reading from a script or autocue that was to his left..
Then that poor kid of Bill Boal's being paraded on TV, and saying he was teaching his younger siblings about "Honesty" . .
Shame on the Justice system.. what a joke !!

Anyhow, nice to be able to thank the author more or less directly.. Thank You Bruce ! Your book would be an education to many..

Keep up the good work.. 8)
