Example: the world miss-pronounces the latest variant as in Omicron the 13th letter in the Greek alphabet, rather than
the last letter omega pronounced as micro. Omicron literally means little o.

In my previous posts on this subject I have maintained that it will be through Christmas and the beginning of the New Year that this new variant will become most virulent for the simple reasons that families will be travelling and visiting other members during the festive period. Will people be wanting to have windows and doors open during this cold period ?

I believe it's more down to world economies that are holding back any new lock downs. Most western nations simply can not afford long periods where not only are they having to dole out money, but also unable to receive revenues.

The third world is in a worse situation, Egypt is not alone in now having to put up for sale some of their state owned industries, once they would have been premium prices, now with so much uncertainty, I believe only bargain basement prices will be offered.

And omega literally means big o.

I hope you’re not suggesting that the stress on either word goes anywhere but the “o”.

If so, you’d horrify any native Greek speaker, anyone who’s studied Greek and anyone who’s been to Greece!

Nothing to do with the pandemic.

Egypt announced plans to sell stakes in nearly 30 state- owned enterprises back in 2018. Part of the economic programme on which IMF finance was conditional.

But a downturn in world markets, and now the pandemic, have slowed or halted plans.

As a rule, like it seems most other people on this forum, cannot be bothered to post is that we get the usual 'papal bull' from the E.P.S., however........

The 2018 IMF agreement to sell off Egyptian state assets, were made with full knowledge that such sites would be almost impossible to open up to the real market, and that is why they failed.

In recent weeks a number of very important state owned sites, including a number in the most prestigious parts of Garden City have been sold off to the likes Oxford Buisness Group, and other similar world wide concerns. It has even been joked that the new 'Luxor open-air museum' would soon be added to an international portfolio.

The Egyptian exchequer is still suffering having to payout dividends on Suez Canal bonds, which were a disaster, but still having to pay ex-pat Egyptians 15% on each and every bond. Another state owned asset that has come to notice is the state airline Egyptair. Many would see this as 'one of the jewels in the crown' and although the government has just forked out almost $500,000,000 to keep it afloat, and the fact that it has sold another load of its quality aircraft AGAIN, many in the aviation industry, see this as being once again a major hub, if real investment is made, once out of the hands of the Egyptian government.

In truth, Egypt's economy is in a much worse state, than most leading countries of the third world, we are told that inflation is 5%, though I expect rural inflation is more near 10%. I can imagine the son of Boutros Boutros Ghali, (once finance minister of Egypt) sat in his Knightbridge balcony house, almost overlooking the present Egyptian visa office, laughing his head off.

Horus, taught me one thing on here, don't bother arguing with the E.P.S., and like almost always, he was right.

A-Four...the WestBank road sweeper a.k.a.world economic guru.

He should read what I actually wrote a little more carefully

As I said, Egypt’s sales of SOEs are part of a fiscal plan and nothing to do with pandemic....although that might well impact the timing and success of the operation

As to whether his views on the state of the Egyptian economy are worth reading...a quick glance at his qualifications as an economist tells you all you need to know.

One of my favourite mispronunciations - of egyptological relevance - is that of the goddess Hathor.

It should be HAT-HOR ( from hwt-hr : house of Horus) rather than the ubiquitous HATHOR....but I’ve yet to hear anyone pronounce it other than with a “th” in the middle.

I do Newcastle!! Quite a few years ago now I found an excellent guide through Ahmet Balal at Petra. Very, very knowledgeable, and very interesting man to talk to. He taught me how to understand which god/goddess I was looking at by reading the small cartouche with the name - the very first one was Hat-Hor!! I’ve continued to study, and I have a very good little book - The Names of the Kings of Egypt by Kevin L Johnson and Bill Petty - purchased from Aboudi on Passport Street. Hopefully, when my health and Covid allow, I’ll be back in Luxor wandering around the temples again!

I noticed today, Boris' highly paid Eaton edication [sic] 'Obviously he never paid any attention in class as he pronounces,
omicron incorrectly.
As opposed to my mate's newish mate Jacob, I have yet to hear him pronounce it, 'bet he pronounces it correctly.
Obviously Rees Mogg listened to his tutors, as opposed to the 'class clown Johnson junior.

It's about time we followed Israel:
The group of red countries already includes the UK, Denmark, the United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Finland, France, Sweden, South Africa and several dozen other African nations.

… the government approved the ministry’s recommendation to classify the United States, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Portugal, Canada, Switzerland and Turkey as “red” states and place them under a travel ban.

I doubt Egypt would ever put any country on a “red list”….even if the Black Death were ravaging it….but I'm taking no chances and heading for the land of the pharaohs shortly.

Besides….Alexandria has had snow and I love a white Christmas :a52: :a52: :a52:
