Some lovely shots there Grandad but you really took me back to a dreadful time in my life, with the Bleak House one
I was 9 & in a convalescent home in Broadstairs (the hospital thought the sea air would do me good) It was December & I could only see my parents for 2 hours a week & it had been the same in GOSH

Not many surfers at that time of year but we had tea in that place every week

Just a update on the Shell photography competition on the "Buchan" area.
I didn't make it to the final 3 but as I mentioned before I was pleased to be in the final 20 from 250.
It was really a great night meeting with other amateur photographers & putting faces to names/photos, plenty wine, champers & a spread of food for all which everyone enjoyed....I'm sure.
Canvases were auctioned off & all monies donated to a local charity "Crossroads"...I'm happy to say with my bid I won the canvas that is 2nd winner.
Here are the winners :
1st
2nd
3rd

Here it is Fran the oldest Dry Dock in the harbour today which is still famous for the best known surgeon to sail from Peterhead... Arthur Conan Doyle while still a student in medicine at Edinburgh, he sailed under Cpt John Gray on the "Hope"
We have many streets named after the captains/masters of the whaling ships that sailed from here & still today "Blubber Quay" exists at the harbour.

Yours was an excellent photo, I guess they were after "pretty" this year, yours is very historic.
I love the one you have bought, is it framed or do you have to do that?

[quote="Kiya"]First of all thanks for all your lovely comments on my pic, when I first uploaded it I thought what could be more "Buchan" than this pic of the "Dry Dock" afterall whaling & fishing has always been the heart of my home town of Peterhead, the oil arrived only 40 yrs ago.
The competition theme was "Buchan" & suggestions were of local people, landmarks, wildlife or local produce...... I guess you could be right Fran the judges went for pretty, out of the 6 winners ( 3 of them were under 16 yrs) only 2 I can say were really "Buchan" theme & the 1st place winner above was exactly that.
Not to worry its only a competition & I look forward to the next 1 starting which the theme is "Four Seasons"
Fran the pictures were all already ready to hang on canvases.

I hope you get a year to do the next one then

Will you do some sort of montage?
Were you able to keep your own picture?

Fran not sure yet what I'll do for the next comp.......I can chop & change my mind as I go

........did think of a montage but will see later.
My son won the bid for my canvas.....only no idea where to hang it. My daughter liked the 2nd winner canvas so thats why I put a bid for it to give to her.

One of the best sites for reviews of digital cameras is
www.dpreview.com - each camera reviewed usually gets 20 pages or more, including comparisons with similar cameras from other companies. I used it a lot before settling on my new Nikon.

That is a good site Stan

I have been viewing it myself in recent weeks, they give very indepth reviews.

Stan, did your 'couriers' do the business for you and are you happy with the new Nikon?
I am very happy with my D5000 but having just visited dpreview and checked out the spec for the new D7000 I am a little green
But you cannot hope to keep up with all the latest innovations.

The fellow teaching my digital photography class is a professional photographer and he has a D7000 he has brought to class. It is really a super spiffy camera!
There is one side to the entire "digital" world that I can see and that is keeping up with the latest and greatest. New models of old technology would come out but not nearly as quickly as stuff changes nowadays. It is hard to know 'when' to buy into something as it is a 'sure thing' it will come down in price and change the next day.

The D7000 is not due for release in the UK until end October LLL, and it will have a 'Super Spiffy'

price of around £1100 with kit 18 - 105 VR lens.
I am happy I got my 5000 for £470 with 18 - 55 kit lens.

And have since bought a 55 - 200 to increase my range.

ohhhhhhhhhh - I didn't realize I was seeing (D7000) something that wasn't out worldwide! WOW! This guy teaching the class is a long time professional photographer. He and his wife specialize in wedding photography but he also does lots of Marine photography too. He is quite interesting to talk to and great with giving us all kinds of tips and tricks.
This is his website:
http://www.dixonmarinephotography.com/pages/intro.htm
I can 'do' all the tips and tricks in class. My problem is retaining all this knowledge and using it enough to learn it well once I'm outside the classroom. There is just sooooo much to figure out and I'm not sure I've got the F stop thing down yet either. Truly interesting. Kiya has made amazing strides. I hope I can keep up!
