At it's height the Ottoman Empire was far more extensive and more powerful than the British Empire, extending beyond the Middle East into much of Asia and Eastern Europe. Do you imagine that they gained all of those territories by peaceful means? Of course not. They conquered them. Violently. History is a catalogue of conquerors and the conquered. They were not all European conquests. Far from it. But that's HISTORY. History should never be used to justify the perpetration of violence in the present day. The Middle East remains a hotbed of ancient enmities as between Shia and Sunni's. Much of the world is more peaceful nowadays. But Peace is often hard won and always fragile. Groups such as IS, Boko Haram, Al Shebab at al openly threaten that peace. Their avowed intention is to obliterate Shia's, Christians, Kurds, Jews, Hindu's, Buddhists and pretty much all of humanity except themselves and their adherents and to establish a worldwide (Sunni) Islamic Caliphate. And they seem to have made a pretty determined start. If they continue unabated how will the world look in ten or fifteen years from now?
