It's an opinion that has been expressed to me by many more than one ex pat.
I can't change peoples attitudes one actually said to me yesterday that it was all a huge hoax, just a way of injecting people not with a vaccine but a tracking device and offered to send me published proof by various well respected scientists and doctors.
I give up, I do what I do and let everyone else get on with it.

In my initial post on this subject on 7th May, I wrote that Porton Down was working on a booster vaccine, and that perhaps it would be available by mid-Autumn, well it seems that recent findings have indicated, that this may not be just a booster, but a SUPER booster vaccine. The Uviersity of Southampton has for the past year invited volunteers to take part in trials of various Covid vaccines. They are now seeking volunteers of all ages along the South West coast from Southampton to Poole in Dorset for this new trial. Any one who lives there on this forum will have heard of the request for volunteers through the local media. Apparently, early indications are that this could be the true world pathfinder,........we shall see.

With regards Luxor, or Egypt as a whole, when their national press is saying that the daily death rate is, and has been throughout less than 60, that has to be a joke, as I have said on here before. What is certainly not a joke, is when we can compare with another similar country, for example Morocco where 20% of the population has received their first vaccine, and 13% received their second. In Egypt only 1% has received their first vaccine, I will leave it to others to guess the take up of the second dose.

With regards the attitude of most, but not all ex-pats in Luxor, when I was there, it was that they were buying houses etc, though few did not even know the price of a pint of milk, as I read Carrie's comments above, it seems little has changed. Things in Egypt will certainly get worse long before they ever get better. Any one who is even thinking of visiting that country, with the idea that they are safe must be off their trolleys.

I just hope Egypt does not get any worse..

To be honest I was expecting it to get quite bad out there with the old "InshAllah" attitude that that have. Basically comparable to what's happening in India right now, even with my more positive attitude to life, it still pays to sum up the risks..
I know I wouldn't want to be there should I get covid and rather nestle in the bussom of the good old UK NHS should things take a bad turn.

Second jab in a couple of weeks time, then I may feel a bit more comfortable about travelling, though to be totally honest, I have no intentions of booking anything this year. I might look at doing something in the spring of 2022.....
We will be ripe for being further fleeced at airports for expensive tests, I don't want to sit on a plane for 5 hours with a mask on, nor do I even want to be considering using precautions and taking any risks while on a holiday. It kind of negates the whole purpose.

This virus, like ‘flu, is going to be with us forever and I can’t see any logical reason for not travelling once you’re vaccinated. Whilst vaccination does not guarantee you total immunity, it reduces the risk of being hospitalised, or worse, to the extent that it shouldn’t affect you going about your life as you did before someone ate that bat in China.

Of the millions who have been vaccinated only a handful are reported a being re-infected with serious consequences.

There is an argument that you can still carry and transmit the virus....but my answer to criticism on that score is to point out that the testing and quarantining regimes at borders should screen out anyone endangering the population.

Many countries are now opening their borders to vaccinated entrants, in the recognition that they pose little real risk.

Although it may seem crazy, I remember that the drug THALIDOMIDE was used for a much wider range of conditions than most people believe, besides the one most know of, it was used as a sedative, even a treatment for colds and flu. One has to be very careful of being vaccinated against certain things and then coming into contact with a variant, which who know could be much stronger,........who knows the future of Covid 19. We already have seen the immediate effect on the over 55's, a mutation is not always weaker, if this was so then the common cold and flu would have been eradicated through vaccine years ago.

For goodness sake what do they have to do to inform some one of seriousness of Covid 19.

Next year will be a much safer year.

It’s true we have a lot to learn about variants of this virus. All we do know is that the vaccines seem to be effective against those detected so far.

But we don’t know what variants might be lurking abroad.....or indeed here. Or how dangerous and vaccine-resistant they might be. And regarding vaccines...remember Thalidomide

So the safest thing might be not only to avoid going abroad....but to avoid leaving home!

But fear not......for some reason (answers on a postcard).......

Next year will be a much safer year.

It seems to me that those who come from the surrounding areas of Leeds would have us believe that Gods own country is for them, and them alone. Those of us who were born in the likes of Sheffield or anywhere else in the southern area of the old W.R.C.C., can still say a spade is a spade,........and not a shovel. .

I have never had a flu jab in my life as I dont get the flu that badly anyway when I do get it.

I think there will be many changes to our lives now. Covid is the catalyst for those changes.
We are already seeing the effects and the bigger picture will emerge as time goes by.
I do know that the powers that be have indeed been expecting this to happen, and preparations were being made for things to be a lot worse than they have (so far) tuned out to be. That was in America of course.
I'm an optimist. I'm sure when the dust settles, even though it may take some time things will be a lot better than they were before.

I won't be travelling to Luxor this year either. I've had both jabs and maybe a third in the autumn? The thought of mixing with passengers from red zones at Heathrow puts me off completely. That is an absolute travesty, along with 3-4 hour queues and rip off costs for pcr tests, the thought of travelling abroad puts me off. No this year will be the delights of Cleethorpes for me!!

Although I’m not too concerned about “ red list “ passengers....unlikely to be encountered.....I share your dismay at the lengthy procedures when returning to the UK, occasioned by the need to process, manually, each entrant. A procedure which, before, took around 30 second will now take, on average, 15-20 minutes.

The queues will be appalling once significant travel resumes.

But, it’s catch 22. Whilst the majority of countries are amber/ red...there won’t be much volume of traffic.

It’ll be interesting to see what develops.

I doubt I’ll be returning to UK before October.....and am hoping the situation regarding tests etc will be better by then. Quarantining however doesn’t bother me. That’s been normal for the last 18 months

I actually thought about going to the Turkish side of Cyprus for a change. But whilst they will let you through from the Greek side they won't let you return back until Turkey is off the red list. That put pay to that!!

I have been thinking long and hard about this. I think a lot of the attitude here is due to lack of information. Most ex pats don't listen to or watch Arabic news programmes.
We aren't bombarded with TV and radio broadcasts saying how awful things are, unless you look specifically then there isn't a lot of information. And it generally isn't a topic of conversation.
Turn on the BBC world service and all you seem to get is what the Sussex's have been up to now, I don't care so I switch off.
It's so easy to ignore, to think we live in a safe little bubble where these awful things aren't happening.

It’s easy to lose sight, when discussing the pandemic, that views and decisions as to what to do are based on one’s personal assessment of risk versus reward.

There are certain indisputable facts ( at least according to current scientific data) :

- the virus is present amongst the population, in all countries, but more so in some than others
- the virus can cause serious short and long term disability, more so in the elderly and infirm
- vaccines are available which substantially reduce the chances of catching, or being affected by, the virus

For the fully vaccinated individual, the risks associated with it are probably less than any other risks one faces going about one’s day to day life.

But the risk v reward decision is an assessment down to each individual. No one should be criticised for being ultra- cautious or total incautious.

The only people I have no time for are those that deny the vaccine is of any use, or that it’s dangerous....or that COVID-19 doesn’t exist or is no more serious than seasonal flu.....and those who, without any scientific knowledge whatsoever, question the assessments of the experts because they’ve got nothing better to do.
