Have you ever been hypnotised?

Was it for a stage show? Or for something more personal, such as giving up smoking?

Sounds daft but I'm not sure. I attended a stop smoking course and near the end he appeared to hypnotise people, being partially deaf I couldn't hear a ruddy thing but just sat there. The reason I say I'm not sure is that I have never smoked since (3 years) so maybe I could hear subconsciously or something I dunno.
