Ever since the iftar at the family house - we've been playing the identify the fish game! Whilst knowing the arabic name is nice - I would also like to know what it's called in English. So we've all been walking round doing fish imitations at each other - which although amusing hasn't actually helped in the identifications!
So far we've got the obvious ones nailed down - but we're having particular problems with a fish that has the arabic name of Lut or Loot. Anyone heard of this one?
Another one that's causing problems is Morgan fish.
I've been going round and round on the internet in English and arabic and have reached the point of conceeding defeat!

Are they flat fish or 'round' fish?
Sea or river fish?
What characteristic markings do they have?
What is the normal sort of size?
Are they specific to a season?
Do they have white or coloured flesh?

Ahh!!! Now that's the problem Hepzi! By the time I got there the dirty deed had been done and they had already been chopped up and deep fried in batter!
All I have to go on so far is the name - but am planning to try to track one down and takes its picture in its prebattered form!
Both of them are sea fish. ne of them may have loked something similar to a fat mackeral - but definitely wasn't a mackerel as we already id'd that one! It was sort of chopped up into steaks, and seemed to be about the same size shape and texture as cod - but didn't know cod existed here.
The morgan fish - was also subjected to the deep frying technique - sort of a blush pink in colour and about the size of an open hand with a bit of a more rounded belly.

The fish that we did manage to id are: gilthead bream, Grouper, sea Bass, Skate, Mullett, Tilapia, Sole and a possible red mullett. You can possibly guess from this that the table was fairly heaving in fish!

what is "iftar"

Iftar is the Muslim meal that breaks the fast at sundown. Sohour is the other muslim Ramadan meal - the final meal before the day breaks.

So what are these in Arabic? I have been eating all sort of delicious fish but I have no idea what I've been eating! Bouri is good, is that mullet?

I think "Morgan" is Red Snapper?

These all sound like Red Sea fish.
The local Bolti Fish from the Nile is a kind of bream (Tilapia Nilotica)

It would be nice to see pictures and where to buy them, without having to go to the Red Sea.

If I lived in Alex I think I would live on fish.
From Luxor the Red Sea is a lot closer.
Decent fish is a luxury here.

There's a delicious fish from the Red Sea called "Wagar"....I have absolutely no idea what it is in English though....Goddess???????

Up here we call it Wa'aar!!

It's Sea Bass - we have it quite often up here - it's one of the really common ones - that's why I know the name! It's all the others that are a mystery! Still on the quest for Lut Fish!

Ok! I confess!! Been searching all afternoon for the piece of paper with a load of fish in Arabic and English on - and I think I've just discovered I chucked it out!! So - I've started writing them all out and we'll play the identify the fish game later on again! Shame - it was quite a good list!! I need to get more organised.

There is an excellent fish restauraunt in aswan ........urm dont know WHERE exactly but near the station and we had a really good fish meal there (and loads of those baby pickled gherkin thinggies)

If you need my help to buy Tuna from Omar's - there's no hope for you!!!

Saying 'kabeer jamboree' at loud volume to countless fishmongers produced zero results in obtaining lobster, any ideas on the pronuctiation if you cannot draw or indicate said Lobsters...

Google knows...in Finnish language Bolti is just tilapia and so it seems to be also in English. Have not much knowledge about fish but it might be perch-like fish...perciformes or something.

Lout/Lut (Sciaena Umbra) seems to be brown meagre?
