Photo Gallery for Finding Places

Post by Winged Isis »

On Mrs D's post about Arkwrights, someone kindly posted a photo, which I have printed to bring with me to make finding it easier. Could someone please post one of Omar's and the other food stores and the liquor store mentioned on the forum...would be ever so grateful! :clap2:

Perhaps this could be a Sticky, which can be added to over time???

Edited to make the post a sticky as requested

Hey another great idea and good contribution to an even better forum Winged Isis!

I've produced a couple of 'location maps' based on Google Earth's view of Luxor.

Feel free to download them to your PC.

WARNING:- They both are extremely large files, but I didn't want to cut the size down, as they would be less readable.

If there are any places that I haven't added, let me know, and I can add them, if I know where they are!

I've quickly made a 3rd map of the Karnak area

Aw shucks, thanks MK!

That is great, thanks Stan, have used it before. :)

But I was thinking of photos of actual shopfronts, taken by standing directly opposite the shop, hotel, office etc. Like the one of Arkwrights, as I said above, so you know what to look for, as addresses are so vague in Egypt, street numbers being scarce as hen's teeth

I know what you mean WI, and in conjunction with Stans maps I think the two would complement each other very well.

What I would like to see is a map giving the various villages and areas of Luxor East & West. For example, if you were looking to rent a flat for the first time, would you necessarily know where Fayrouze was or Ramla?

Stan, perhaps its worth adding the Fair trade shop :) ?

I think Winged Isis's idea is good. For example with the fair trade shop, some people find it difficult to find it because its small and on a little corner. A picture of it would make it very easy to recognise it. I think the idea is easy to do, if people add photos on this thread of shops, restaurants, and hotels that they may have.

Having said that, that would make it very annoying to open this thread... Maybe an album could be created for this purpose in the L4U albums??? Titled for example "locations" or "shop fronts".

May I make a suggestion? Two things you might wish to consider adding to are Wikimapia and Panoramio:

www.wikimapia.org
www.panoramio.com

That way the stuff you create will be of most use to the most people.

Here's a link to the Fair Trade Shop which clearly shows the shop front:

Thanks Hepzi, but I was just using it as an example why a collection of pictures would be usefull for some people who have not visited Luxor before or are looking for certain shops :)

I realised that SCE, but I'd just seen another post about the Fair Trade Shop too but I'm not sure where the post is so hoped they see the picture here.

Great maps Stan!

Is the beer shop still in the Souk street? It used to be just before you crossed over Youssef Hassan St into the Egyptian side of the Souk probably due East of Jamboree.

[face=Comic Sans MS]On map 2 it looks as though the beer shop is near the station. But it may be just one of many, or tha one favoured by Stan because you can get the car near. ;) [/face]

You're quite right! That's the one I go to, but there is one in Station Street, at least 5 in the Egyptian Souk, and one in the street leading to the Mubarak Library!

Just a thought - could Keefy or one of the moderators of this section cut and paste my links into a Sticky - could be most useful, as this topic will eventually disappear from the first page.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

Thanks for the support folks! :)
I am really sure it would be useful....a friend was in Luxor recently and I gave him copies of my photos of shops belonging to some friends (taken for this very reason) so he could find them easily. He said they were great, as he wouldn't have noticed one it was so small, and he cannot read Arabic. Even if the name is in English, it can be "Egyptian English", like the "Lout Bazaar" I noticed in the souk last visit! I think it was meant to be "Lotus" God help us all if they are so readily available!
I even took photos of the shops at night, as they look very different all lit up. I have tried to find places based on an Egyptian's directions more than once....they don't always translate well, whether in writing or verbally.

That's why i suggested a Sticky, Stan, because eventually this page will be one of too many for people to trawl through quickly.

Unfortunately, I can only create a sticky in an area I moderate, so that's why I asked for one of the moderators of this section or Keefy to create one.

Thanks, Keefy! ;)
Okay, over to you lot to add photos of your favourite shops, hotels, restaurants, services etc. please. :)
Could some clever person move the one of Arkwrights over to here to get us started, please? Bless!
