Has anyone ever been there - if so, details? Stuff I have read says it is a three hour walk - any mad dogs out there done it?

It is not a walk it is a steep climb. My cleaner worked on the dig on the top and it took them 3-4 hours to climb up there and he is really fit. So be v careful before attempting it.

Last Christmas day, I drove about 6 people to the base of Thoth Hill. Nearly 8 hours later they returned to the base, and I picked them up. It is a strenuous climb, and certainly should only be attempted during the cold months of the year - ie before May or after October.

Thanks both of you, that's very useful. As many people know I have a mountaineering background and am pretty fit so I wouldn't attempt the climb lightly. And I only ever intend to visit Egypt in the winter months. I think a drive up to the foot of the hill as Stan suggests would probably be sensible. I'm not going to do it this time round but it is definitely one for the future.

Interesting isn't it that ancient Egyptians would have made the climb every day in nothing more than sandals?

I was one of the 6 people stan drove up to the foot of the mountain. The climb is not too steep but it is quite a long way and does take a long time to get up and down.As for animals....you never know so I would take a stick...its always useful an d amobile phone and a companion to be safe. Also a big bag for interesting stones and fossills and a picnic.Have a good trip!

Thanks Andy and Meretseger - I hadn't managed to find this earlier thread. Stan's photo is very useful and confirms the sort of terrain I had imagined. Perfectly do-able as you say, Meretseger. Do you remember how long it took you to get to to the top?

about 3 hours up to the top....spent aa couple of hours up there looking at the temple remains and the wonderful views and ....it is such a lovely place up there.A bit quicker coming down but best to go carefully as it is loose stones most of the way.Do let me know when you are going to do it.

Left Tim fast asleep on top of Thoth Hill this morning. Dreaming of falcon-headed gods and sunrises no doubt!

Yea, didn't leave him snoozing for too long. I was going to tie his shoelaces together and draw a pair of glasses on him but he woke up too soon!

We had a great morning. Started up the hill about 6.30 from the new houses being built and we were up the top after an hour and a half or so. It's not a very long or difficult climb really.

It was amazingly misty and foggy and this made the place pretty ethereal and strange. Rubbish for photography though! We thought the mist would clear after a while but it never did and when we got back into Gezira around 12.30 it was pretty misty and hazy there as well. It did make for an amazing trip though and the hills and the Horus Temple look beautiful engulfed in fog!! Some pics...

Great pics, they have quite a mysterious feel to them. So let me guess is Tim the one in blue? Did you manage to set a timer for that one or are you like the Discovery team who always take a camera man with them

You were too modest this evening, there are some great shots there :) They came out far better than I would have expected given the conditions
