I recently discovered, and fell in love with, Om Ali.
Are the store mixes any good, or should I hope for a recipe?? (HINT!)
Best to all,
Scott

Here you go Scott!
INGREDIENTS
1 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed
60 g chopped walnuts
120 g chopped pecans
115 g chopped hazelnuts
145 g raisins
95 g flaked coconut
250 g white sugar, divided
950 ml milk
120 ml heavy cream
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Place the pastry sheets in the baking dish and place the dish in the oven. Watch it closely. When the top layer turns crunchy and golden, remove it from the oven. Continue until all the sheets are cooked.
Preheat the oven broiler.
In a bowl, combine walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, raisins, coconut and 1/4 cup sugar. Break cooked pastry into pieces and stir into nut mixture. Spread mixture evenly in 9x13 inch dish.
Bring milk and 1/2 cup sugar to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Pour over nut mixture.
Beat the heavy cream with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar until stiff peaks form. Spread evenly over nut mixture in dish.
Place dessert under oven broiler until top is golden brown, about 10 minutes.
Serve hot.

Sounds great - a little work - but worth it!
Only problem - here in Luxor I have not been able to find walnuts or especially pecans. Some walnuts at Ramadan, but that's it.
I will be in Cairo next week - will check Carrefour's.
THANKS!
Hopefully I'll have the recipe mastered by the time you get here!!!!
Best,
Scott

[face=Comic Sans MS]Hmmmm I was really keen to try Om Ali on my last visit, but never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. The cafe's or shops either hadn't got it ready yet if I was early or else it had all gone.

So Scott, if you master the recipe I might be searching you out on my next visit.

I always have Om Ali at the Nakhil. Not often though as I was usually too full after the main course.
It took about 45 minutes for the chef to cook so I would sometimes have a light main and order the Om Ali at the same time.
Just reading that recipe New Gal, it would make a seriously large Om Ali enough for at least 6 people I would think
Scott, I think you could vary the types of chopped nuts according to what is locally available. You don't want to have to go to Cairo every time you fancy making one do you

You can get walnuts here in Cairo and in the spice bins section in Carrefour loose weight. About 80 a kilo.
You can buy Om Ali packets with everything in it and just add the sugar and milk.
I made it once and added a touch cinnamon and hubby said it was okay. Nor great just okay

Scott why don't you take your own dish to your favourite restaurant and ask them to make you some to take out i used to do that in Hurghada and they were always more than happy to do it,you know what an obliging lot these egyptians are

Eeeek it sounds rather Ghastly to me, but then I don't like Bread and butter pudding either.

[face=Comic Sans MS]I think it will be too sweet for me, but I just want to try it, and my tastebuds can cope with sweeter foods when I'm in hot climates. [/face]

In fact the Om Ali I have had is not very sweet so you don't need a sweet tooth for it.
