I've just picked my first small crop of star-fruit. I haven't eaten them for years and now I remember why, I think they taste awful!
They do look quite decorative in a fruit salad if finely sliced, but they really need something tasty to cover their astringent taste in my opinion.
Anybody actually like them?

- Too sour for my taste, but very beautiful. I have seen people get upset, when they have eaten a slice from a desert plate without knowing what it was. I used them a lot in the eighties when it was advanced and exotic, but I never enjoyed anything but the look of them.

I've had them in stir fry veggies. The shape adds an interesting look and if they're fried/hot the taste is ok combined with vegetables.

- I believe you I have only had them in Northern Europe, so they have not had the chance to ripen before they were exported, and I have often wondered what they would taste like sunripe. They should be a little brown to be good, the ones I have had looked like plastic!

Yes Bennu actually the taste was relatively bland but the shape and colour added to the stir fry. Not sure how they'd taste fresh and ripe.

Mine are dark orange some going brown and they still taste horrible.
I think if I can find the time I'll try slicing them and candying them, that might be the answer!

Try chucking them in a big bucket of water a few kilo's of sugar see what happens in a month....ice lollies....
ps Iv'e got 8 pimm's lollies in the freezer as we speak.

Exactly what I was thinking! I have had them in stir-fry, with a good dollop of soy sauce some of the bitterness goes but they are an acquired taste.

I had the chance to try some "over ripe" star fruit which were almost mahogany colour and changed my opinion completely. The smell too is delicious and invades my kitchen. Who would have thought it?

I want to like star fruit but find they make my mouth go all dry and 'furry' - no matter how ripe or not they are.
I first tried them in the 1980's and do try them every now and again perchance my taste-buds may have changed, but no, they still taste of nothing and leave my mouth dry.
