hatemelwakeel is a member of the forum and teaches Arabic. Try getting in touch with him. However it is Ramadan when you want your lessons so this might be a problem.

Hello
My husband and I are in a similar position to the woman who asked this question originally. we will be in Luxor from around mid December 2012 for a month or so and would like to know if there are any beginner Arabic classes we could attend locally or whether there is someone who would tutor us (several lessons per week). cheers

Dr H does an intensive 2 week course at Hotel Sheherazade (you dont have to be a guest) tailored to your needs ie do you want to read and write, or just learn to speak the language. PM me if you want any further details.

Hiya.

I, too, am interested in learning Arabic. I will be in Luxor for around 7 weeks next March. Could you please tell me where the Sheherazade Hotel is. Also can someone tell me if I can stay for 7 weeks on just the tourist visa you get at the airport or can I go to the Passport Office in Luxor for a visa extension and what is the cost? Thanks for your help.

I spent last winter in Luxor studying Arabic. Tried a couple of different private teachers. The last one I found through Ahlan-Egypt which had posters up in various locales around town (they have a website with contact info, just google them). The school is located near the Emilio Hotel on the East Bank. Were not running group classes at the time but private lessons were affordable. I think I paid 50 LE an hour. Studied in the teacher's home located near Luxor Temple so central on the East Bank. Teacher was female which I found necessary after first experience. She teaches MSA and colloquial, and will tailor the program to whatever it is you want to accomplish. Excellent English to help with explanations. Very pleased with the experience, I would definitely use her again.

I also heard through an acquaintance there was an Arabic teacher (male) who worked at the Movenpick who was also good and less expensive. But I'm afraid I have no idea what his name was or how to get in touch with him.

On the visa, the tourist visa you get at the airport only entitles you to stay 30 days. I didn't understand that the first time (for some reason I had in my mind that it was valid for 3 months) and got fined when I left the country. The fine wasn't particularly big though, something like 140 LE. When I went back after Christmas, I knew the visa was only good for 30 days so I got an extension at the passport office no problem (can't remember the cost but it was cheaper than the fine!).
