Stats on the Nile

A friend, knowing of my many trips to Egypt and hearing me talk about my love of felucca sailing, was asking how wide is the Nile in Luxor. Anyone???

Any advance on a guess of about a half kilometre?

According to Google Earth - the Ferry to Ferry distance is 489 metres. But remember that due to the control of the height of the Nile, the width can vary by 20 metres or so. The Google Earth pictures were taking in October, when the river was lower.
