The Luxor Criminal Court sentenced Yasser al-Hambouly to life in prison in absentia, the 10th life sentence he has been given.

Tight security measures were imposed around the Luxor court complex while the case was being reviewed.

The prosecution charged Hambouly with resisting arrest and possessing unlicensed automatic weapons. His 16-year-old son Heshmat was sentenced to seven years and his father in law Mahmoud Refaie to ten years for possession of unlicensed firearms.

The case dates back to December, when security services raided Hambouly’s house. He was shot twice but evaded capture while his son and father-in-law fired at policemen. Hambouly was arrested in January.

The 37-year-old escaped from Qena prison last January with one of his relatives and evaded arrest several times. He has become infamous in Upper Egypt for what officials described as his dramatic escapes into sugar cane fields. He is facing over 100 lawsuits.

Shot twice and escaped, imprisoned and escaped...... Sums a lot of things up!!!

Or is it the family that has enough money to pay for his capture free life????

They can give him as many life sentences as they want.. " in absentia "..

Presumably, harsh sentencing makes it look like the justice system is working, even though he has evaded capture...

With 10 life sentences looming over his head, I doubt he will want to be caught anytime soon..
Maybe hang around for 30 years in Rio for a few decade's like Ronnie Biggs. :cg

If the Luxor police are anything like the brave British coppers, then Yasser al-Hambouly wont be loosing in his freedom any day soon..

I'm pretty certain Yasser al-Hambouly is not at large, let alone flying down to Rio. The "in absentia" references mean he was not in court; he has been in custody since his capture at the end of January – a cause for much celebration in the streets of Luxor when they finally got him into a cell! He got his third life sentence – though the report also said 25 years – in September, when his lawyer demanded a retrial. It would appear the review of the case has raised the total to ten life sentences!

Perhaps there's confusion because the latest news item refers to him escaping from prison "last January". That escape – he was serving life – was the previous January, 2011, when so many prison gates were mysteriously opened one night as the revolution got underway.

3 life sentences, ten life sentences.. There is really no difference after the first life sentence to be fair..

Oh well, there was me thinking he was on the loose again.. I guess he will have to wait for the next revolution..
