Some bad news!
Due to the selfishness and stupidity of several people the various missions and the SCA officials are considering terminating all further lectures.
The missions are very concerned that their presentations which in many cases reveal new and unpublished information are being photographed and published on the internet without their permission. They make these presentations purely out of goodwill and for the benefit of colleagues and those laypeople in Luxor who have a keen interest in their work. Taking photographs at lectures is not permitted under copyright law unless prior consent has been granted. Flash photography is extremely irritating in any case.

Personally I am very dissappointed because it took me a lot of effort and persuasion to get them restarted and organise the speakers.

To those who have been taking photographs...shame on you!

I am sorry but not surprised to hear this. I attended the first lecture on January 27th and was amazed at the amount of camera clicking and flash photography taking place.

I went last night and thought the lecture was brill. I will be very dissappointed if future lectures are cancelled because of stupid selfish people. Could Barry not make an announcement just prior to the lecture starting that photography was not allowed and to please ensure that mobile phones are switched off. Even if were not illegal it is extreemly distracting to have flash photography, why do people think they have the right to do it, it's not a pop concert.

Did I not say in a previous post that the return of the lectures was a good thing as long as certain people do NOT record them and place them on their own web sites. These presentations are copyrighted material and should remain so until they are released by the product holder. But once again to make themselves look better they go against the rules and say stuff you I'll do what I want. Now they have come close to spoiling it for everyone you NUMB NUTS.

I thought that that was the reason the earlier regular lectures were cancelled. Were the new lectures cleared with Cairo, or was it a local decision - if not, I can understand why they may be cancelled.

I also have to wonder whether there is really a need for a formal lecture, when most of the expeditions regularly publish daily online dig-diaries, which are an excellent source of information as to what is happening. Although I didn't go to the recent one about Malqata, I think I am almost as well informed by using the excellent iMalqata site - http://imalqata.wordpress.com/

Sorry Stan but as usual recently your opinion is not correct. You have not attended any lectures for some considerable time so how can you know anything about the current situation.
Try attending again and you may be surprised at what you are missing...if you retain any real interest!

Your rather snide remark does not negate the main thrust of my post! Were the lectures referred to Cairo? Or are the old rules not being enforced anymore - I noticed that the television archaeologist Joanne Fletcher is to return to Egypt for another TV series, despite being banned under the Zahi regime.

I don't go to the lectures anymore for several reasons - I don't particularly enjoy crossing the river at night, I find the air-conditioning oppressive and often found the lecturer's English (not their fault at all, I hasten to add) almost incomprehensible, which detracted from the content of the presentation. At the same time, I have to say that they made for a pleasant night out.

No Stan I do not have to have the lectures "cleared by Cairo" I arrange them at the request of Mansour Boraik.
I'm sorry that you feel unable to attend for the reasons you give but the 120+ people of varying nationalities that do turn up each week suggest that a great deal can be learned. I find it hard to believe that you have difficulty understanding cultured American voices? However, this Sunday's lecture will be by a Spanish speaker but his English is very good.

Thanks for the Imalqata site. It's impressive and maybe tourist web sites would benefit from links to such sites.

On the lectures, do the major tourist hotels advertise them? Tourists might be prepared to pay good money to attend and, given the slim nightlife, might be interested going. A cash flow from this, running in the right direction, might provide an incentive for them to continue.

Are there any other sites along the same lines you could recommend?

If for when Winged Isis gets here you can not get any one to do a lecture, then I shall give a couple on all the crabbie tourists I have come across in my time in Egypt. The first lecture will deal with those when you ask "Are you British", they answer "No, I'm Scottish". .
