Well I am sorry you chose the wrong landlord Adamantium. MY landlord was brilliant, anything went wrong he was there with "the man" to fix it right away. He would have had to have stayed up very late to turn my AC off as I dont sleep much, stay reading or watching films..

An Egyptian acquaintance of mine that owns and rents out, or used to in busy days long since gone, a number of flats to Europeans has a contract that they sign stating that he, as the landlord, must have 24/7 access to his properties in cases of any emergency. If the new renter was to change the locks, which is a thing that I would want to do for the obvious reasons, could give the renter problems as you would be taking away the landlords right to enter his own property.

Maybe it is correct to bring up old subjects, especially when things are not improving, there are still house breakers doing the rounds, still opportunist muggers doing the rounds, still people assaulting women around, still aggressive hassle around, so you still need to be aware. I think the Police staff need to be extended so that at least 50% of all areas get patrolled, even for smaller things such as traffic offences, and traffic licensing. In 5 years I have not seen a Police vehicle in my area, and it's notorious for unlicensed vehicles using the minor roads to get to Ramla without being caught. Many people congregate in unfinished houses to plot their next move, smoking rubbish and things, I am sick of picking up drug users syringes from the streets, I have to do it to stop the children injuring themselves.
There's nothing in the standard rental contract concerning the keys. He obviously added this himself. The law says you do have to keep property worth a certain amount of month's rent in your flat for the contract to be valid so that the landlord may seize the property as compensation if you don't pay the rent.

It is not the worst thing that has happened to me in regards to renting a flat. I chased after my clothes and got them back. I chose to deal with it personally rather than involve the Police. I had little of great value in the flat unless you include a computer games console. I tended to take valuable stuff like my Cameras with me. They had more sense than to take those as otherwise I would have involved the Police.
I had befriended a number of Egyptians on Facebook so as to keep in touch with what is happening in Egypt. I soon found they just befriended me as they saw Facebook as an opportunity to gain. One character from the West Bank comes on and starts asking me to "Send me Laptop! Send me Laptop." This then changed to iPad and then to Samsung Galaxy. Another from the same area spun me a yarn. He told me all of the other boys in his class laughed at him when they heard his ringtone from his not so smart Nokia N73. (This immediately reminded me of one I had stolen in Luxor) He told me all of the other students have a Smartphone and so could I buy him a smartphone. I asked him if he could send me a photo of all of these well-off students who all have a smartphone. This offended him having him think I was accusing him of lying. I later agreed to get him one having come across the Nokia Lumia 530 for a mere 300LE. Prior to that a long time before I told him I would buy him a pair of Football boots as he loves his football. He put a price on the boots a price of 2000LE. He went from 2000LE to 4000LE for a phone. I was not even going to spend 200LE on boots if I could help it. As for the one asking for Laptops and iPads I had asked him to send me some pictures of Luxor but he could not even go out of his way to do that. He thinks I should go out of my way to furnish him with expensive technology. So even over the internet they try their scams. Clefty little beggars. I have been asked for money of course. Sending money via Western Union is not something I have ever done only because I feel no compulsion to.
I looked into their Facebook profiles and they have a tendency to hide theirs friends list. I ask myself, how many tourists are they spinning this same yarn to? How many phones, laptops or iPads are they hoping to collect via their deceitful friendships. They ask for a lot but provide little referring to the photos I had asked for as well as the fact when I do ask about the situation in Luxor and Egypt as a whole the conversation usually goes quiet. So it is as if they don't want me to know the true state of affairs. For all I know they may be fortunate amongst Egyptians. They might have well-to-do parents. But just as I feel upset when they ask for money I feel the same when they ask for goods.
I had even posted on Facebook condemning this hassle over the internet. Other Egyptians, usually those from the west bank comment that Egypt is in a bad way and many people are poor. Is that an excuse to take advantage of tourists via the internet? I have since blocked all of them. I only keep the friends who do not use Facebook to get the better of me. I care not for these games.

Why do I find this assertion hard to believe? After "send me laptop", I would have thought the defriending would have taken place immediately if you really don't care for the games. Asking for photos sounds like you have way too much time to invest in dead end relationships.

Really? You didn't immediately block and kept talking after the asking for goods started?
Reminds me of the old ladies who throw public name and shame tantrums with photos on FB when they allegedly have Egyptian men propositioning them on FB. It's this "How dare he harass me (wink wink look at the young hot stud chasing me)!" Some people crave attention, no matter how positive or negative it is.
Reminds me of a lady in our village who suddenly put the price of em bubba up to 40le, and wondered why after she delivered it, she found it back on her doorstep with a sign saying No Thanks.
Obviously she no longer gets any trade from me, and neither does she get our left over food for her chickens. They get too greedy and then wonder why when people stop using them what they have done, but if you notice, it's never their fault! Is it.......
The worse part is, every time I pass her in the street she asks me if I want em bubba, I politely tell her to see the Foriegn Office.
From what I have been hearing 60LE is the going price on the black market these days anyway, so you were offered a good deal. In case you are out of touch with what is going on in Egypt, there is a shortage of anabeeb these days.
Adamantium, you certainly talked to some rubbish people, didnt you know they all want something from you, its bred in them. The only thing I ever gave money for was horse food, and I went on the carriage and bought it and gave it out. no little b---sh....rs ever got a cent out of me. I had a lovely time in Luxor before the revolution, travelling around the villages with AWOL, helping animals and educating people, what did you do ?
Last year, I payed 10 LE for gas, several people had told me that they could "help" me get it for 70. Last week, I just accepted to pay 50, trusting that it was the price.
Umbuba, a mate dropped in for a drink yesterday spotted my empty gas bottle back in 5 minutes with a new one I gave him 50le or £5 quid.
In London it would cost you £35 quid for a refill, we know your on a pension but have a heart prices increase just as much for the locals.
Anyway I have 2 gas bottles for my hob & cooker plus numerous electric hobs, grills, ect..

GD, I think I am way out on what is happening in the Country, did not know about the shortage of em bubba at all, is there a shortage of diesel as well, I gather there is! Maybe another price increase on benzine and diesel would not go amiss to help with stocks and to make people use it and not waste it.
Incidentally I bought a new embuba for 20 LE which was half what they wanted to charge me and 10 le less than I normally pay from the village supplier.
