Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
When Luxor was made a governorate, there was a new national day chosen to coincide with the day of the declaration, which was December 7. November 4 is no longer the national day.

So what can a visitor expect to see or experience that day?Glyphdoctor wrote:When Luxor was made a governorate, there was a new national day chosen to coincide with the day of the declaration, which was December 7. November 4 is no longer the national day.

Yes, that was stupid of me, I completely forgot about our forthcoming intrepid traveler. Perhaps it could be arranged for the new Luxor comity to meet and greet him as he takes a nosedive into the Niles waters.

Comity: legal reciprocity—the principle that one jurisdiction will extend certain courtesies to other nations (or other jurisdictions within the same nation), particularly by recognizing the validity and effect of their executive, legislative, and judicial acts.
Committee: a type of small deliberative assembly that is usually intended to remain subordinate to another, larger deliberative assembly.
In any case, we'll most likely be in Luxor on Wednesday, 6 Nov 2013, to Friday, 8 Nov 2013. I hope to meet at least some of you and buy you a beer. Is there any place that serves some nice Belgian, German, or Czech beer?
I am an experienced traveler, but a newbie to the Middle East.

Oh that is exactly what the expat comity does. They gather round to fawn all over whatever Egyptian political faction happens to be running the country, elected to power in any given month and tells them how great they are and that they share their principles, attitudes towards women's dress, and their hate of their predecessors who have been jailed and the like. And then they do it again when someone else comes to power.pdmlynek wrote: Comity: legal reciprocity—the principle that one jurisdiction will extend certain courtesies to other nations (or other jurisdictions within the same nation), particularly by recognizing the validity and effect of their executive, legislative, and judicial acts.

And Glyph forgot to add that they, the Expats, do it ALL in English too. They're lives are far to full and far to busy to learn Arabic - the official language of the country they LOVE.Oh that is exactly what the expat comity does. Yes pdlmynek you are quite correct about the misuse of the word, a fact that I noted the very first time I posted, but like in the past I decided to leave it to see which numbnut would pull me up on it. You were not my first guess, but one thing that never alters or interferes with my life is to be corrected.pdmlynek wrote:Dusak wrote:... In a word, no. If you are really lucky you might find that sort of thing in a 5 or 6 star (local ratings) hotel, if any are still in business!pdmlynek wrote:In any case, we'll most likely be in Luxor on Wednesday, 6 Nov 2013, to Friday, 8 Nov 2013. Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
I don't drink beer, but to my knowledge there is no good stuff here, most is produced locally. If you can find Stella international beer in Luxor, then it will be the high price.
P.S. - I do know what you mean about the Czech beer, remember when I was young in a place called Brunn, got totally smashed on the stuff, but that's only possible when you get by all the 'froff', but certainly the best.

Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
Wait a minute. Yes, I know that Morsi’s regime tightened up on alcohol licenses (e.g., http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/trave ... oubts.html ), but seriously, no decent beer?
Cocktail Sunset, Kings Head Pub, JJ’s Bar, Pub 2000, Murphy’s, Anubis, Pisscocks, Red Lion? Nothing open? No restaurants serve beer?
BTW, is “Stella” in any way related to Stella out of Leuven?

Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
I'm no expert on the subject but I think you will find that you can still get beer - just not a wide variety of beers. I seem to think there is only a couple of choices. Stella (Egyptian ?) is perfectly good for washing away the dust after a day's touristic activities.

Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
THere are many beers available here, but Stella is the one served in most Egyptian establishments - some may also sell Saqqara, from the same Al-Ahram brewery. Bars such as JJs serve a much wider range, including the Luxor beers, Heineken and Meister.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

You see difficulty as a challenge that makes travelling worthwhile, enjoy the thrill of driving where you may face problems, want to experience the non-touristy parts of Egypt on a week journey with your family and even swim across the Nile. I hope that a few days in Africa without Belgian, German or Czech beer beer will not be too adventurous for you.pdmlynek wrote:Wait a minute. Re: November 4: Luxor National Day
UUHHHHMMMM!!! when I used to drink "Duval" Belgian Beer was the beer of the Century. In Flemish Duval = Devil, Strong, Tasty, ice cold and worth every penny, brewed in Brendonk Belgium. I have tried Stella here but all it does is give you indigestion and bad wind, but then again good for kite flyers
some of the continental beers, such has Grolsh, Stella Art., etc were really good when they were imported, but the British Breweries got their licenses and ruined them
