A nice story in today's papers. Holborn Viaduct close to my London home has been in a state of disrepair for 20 years has finally been refurbished. Opened today in 1869. Under the viaduct are vaults, on the left a huge wine warehouse on the right a huge fish wholesaler....

Ps: Incidentally 25,000 sheets of gold leaf (equating to around 350 grams of gold) were used. I was once chatting to the gold leaf restorer asking him about coating the ben-ben on top of my obelisk.

Obelisk....

Yes true Dr, its been covered up for quite a while, went by on the No 25 yesterday, done a great job.
Not sure here, but I think that this bridge was the first place in London to get public electric street lighting.

No sorry that was Godalming. sorry your right...
In early 1882, Edison opened the world’s first steam-powered electricity generating station at Holborn Viaduct in London, where he had entered into an agreement with the City Corporation for a period of three months to provide street lighting.
Thing is it's still there still supplying the city and heats and cools all of Smithfield and The Barbican. It's a secret, not a lot of people know that....

That's taken me back too many years than I care to go, Dr! My first job was at Holborn in an insurance office!

I'll bet it was the Pru, Ruby Slippers.
Cap't Bob's old building is still there, though the whole of the ground floor is a Sainsbury's now.

No, it wasn't the Pru, A-Four. It was an underwriters. That has really conjured up some memories though: shopping in Gamages; hot beef and mustard rolls from Hart's Corner; Hatton Garden Post Office - and missing the train home because the queues in the PO were so long.........!
