Egypt's big plan to attract tourists back to its shores

Forget the Pyramids, ignore Cairo: Egypt's big plan to attract tourists back to its shores

Egypt’s holiday industry has endured a difficult time in the last three years, as the impact of the Arab Spring revolutions in the Middle East has undermined traveller confidence. And with demonstrations and political unrest keeping Cairo on the front pages rather than in the travel sections, the country’s tourism officials have announced an unusual plan to stimulate interest from overseas visitors – they are going to ignore the capital entirely .....

Mr Zaazou’s idea is to funnel visitors towards more southerly Luxor, where the ancient necropolis of the Valley of the Kings may be of compensation for lovers of the past. "We are working to develop and reinstate international flights such as EgyptAir’s London-Luxor route, which recommences on 17 February,” he continues. “I am confident that our pragmatic approach of distancing Cairo from the rest of Egypt will see 2014 being the year that Egyptian tourism bounces back.”

Lets hope it does bounce back and not just bounce up and down as it has been.

Todays flight from Heathrow landed at 21:54. Can anyone confirm how full it was?

The flight from Paris arrived in the middle of the night on Sunday. Again, how full was it?

Only someone on the flight can answer so we will have to wait a little while to find out.

There is a photo around somewhere for the Paris flight looked like a pretty full load to me.

Maybe the suppression of what happens being reported may help. I do agree though that Upper and Lower Egypt should have its own identity, (All investment seems to go to Lower Egypt at the moment) I hope this works, not for me but for the local people who deserve the chance to work again. I would like to know how they intend separating the two divides so that tourists understand.

Not too sure how suppression of news could happen. If another attack happens (large or small) and Egypt doesn't report it and word gets out (which it will soon as any survivors get home &/or relatives of deceased are contacted) it will be an ever LARGER global News Media issue that Egypt is covering up which will ultimately make Egypt seem more unsafe.

The news of the attack has been widely reported both in the media and on Gov web sites. No way can this be covered up or denied. Nor should it be, visitors to Egypt have every right to be fully informed.

Noticed that the original post states, "The Shores of Egypt", does this mean the Red Sea Resorts or is it all over including inland?
