Consular meeting
It would be interesting to know if the late advertised consular Meeting was well supported, or indeed if anyone attended. It is always a problem getting to know of events that happen in Luxor, we either get to know around 5 hours before they are due to happen or 5 hours after they have happened, or when pictures appear on the internet. Its a problem that has existed for sometime now. It was expected that the new committee would alleviate some of these advertising of events problems but now that has blended into the Sands of Time we get to know nothing.
However according to the internet there are some who do get prior knowledge of these events, but seem they do not want to share the event. Maybe we could use this Forum to advise ex pats on coming events in the future, so like Hepzibah who advertised the Consulate Meeting (Albeit too late for many, but has explained by Hepzibah they too were late in being informed.) can members who get to know of events let us forum members know so that we too can attend if we want to. :tu: :tu:
I am sure people get sick to death of not being able to support their City due to poor advertising, and last minute spur of the moment thinking.

Re: Consular meeting
I don't know anyone who went to the meeting and if it was well attended, like you say CE the notice was a little short, what photos are you talking about?

As a warden I usually get prior notice of these events allowing me to pass them on but received nothing about this one.

That's because you didn't go to the Queens birthday bash, they have fallen out with you. And all because you expected a private jet and limo, it's just not right.

Re: Consular meeting
I only get the information because I have a Facebook account and have signed up to the UK in Egypt (or what ever their page is called) so that I get their news feed. I know many people hear argue against Facebook, but I also know that some of those self same people do have FB accounts. If managed properly, there is nothing so wrong with it as a communication tool. I would suggest that instead of constant complaints about it and then complaining about the lack of information received from certain bodies who use this means of spreading their word folks should just get an FB account and manage it.
In simple terms - I don't look in The Times or the Guardian for my local news, and definitely not if I want to know what is on at my local cinema or, perhaps more relevantly, who has put in planning applications and for what!

Re: Consular meeting
Sorry Hepzi but I did try Facebook...twice and came to the same conclusion on each occasion. I really did not see the point of all the purile rubbish with which one was bombarded. I tried locking down all the security settings but the unwanted linking and photos were just an irritation I could live without.
It seems, despite being registered with UK in Egypt or whatever they call themselves I do not get any mailings or notifications about events other than security warns about events 800km away.

I quite agree about the rubbish that can come your way (but have you read the Hampshire Chronicle lately ;-) ) but it is on the whole manageable these days provided you are not the kind of person who just keeps adding friends, acquaintances, old uncle Tom Cobley and all.
I am not particularly promoting FB - that is not my intent - but I am saying that if people want information on certain things they nee to look where that information is posted. They cannot keep complaining if they know where it is available and they do nothing about themselves but just hope (rely on) someone else (who uses the evil FB) to pass the information on.

Re: Consular meeting
Isn't the whole point of communication the giving and receiving of information? Like a forum? If a forum member gains information that is relevant to other users, they should pass it on via the said forum. That's the whole point of forums, for someone to find out about something and keep it to themselves and say "go look on the net for it yourselves" is rather selfish and petty. It takes 2 mins to bang off a quick post, not everyone is FB savvy.HEPZIBAH wrote:BBLUX wrote:Sorry Hepzi but I did try Facebook...twice and came to the same conclusion on each occasion. Re: Consular meeting
When I see the information I do pass it on. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with people who are just as capable as I to find the information or have it sent to them, and who possibly have much more need than I for that information, regularly complaining that they never see the information or that it is posted here too late etc.Darkstar wrote:Isn't the whole point of communication the giving and receiving of information? Re: Consular meeting
The photo's I am talking about are the photo's that ex pats put on the internet of them attending different events in and around Luxor, (The same way Celebrities advertise themselves). so what I am saying is that there seems to be certain people getting information, and not being prepared to share the information with others. Has yet I am miffed about the reason for this. But there certainly seems to be a split appearing in the ex pat community, those with their own agenda and those who will never be in the know about anything. This is exactly the reverse of what the Governor of Luxor wanted, he wanted all to be in the know. the longer this goes on the more the resentment will grow. Nothing is ever put on the Luxor Committee Site so we have to presume this has rotted in its grave the Committees FB site I am told goes from open to close. it could be that the owners of these sites may be going off on a limb and looking after themselves instead of looking after the Community they were meant to look after. It may also have been done with the blessings of others, I don't know, but certainly there are things happening behind the ex pat communities backs that others do not want them to know. It will not be long before we all know and can maybe tackle the fact. People do find things out from quite mouths, put 2 and 2 together and then realise the truth.

Re: Consular meeting
Really we should be thanking Hepzi. because it is blatently clear we would get to know nothing without her going out on a limb and informing us of events etc.

Re: Consular meeting
I don't look for thanks. I certainly don't go out on a limb. I do believe that if I see a piece of information that is relevant and I'm able to share then I do my best to bring it to general attention. (examples: UK FCO; UK in Egypt; Luxor Film Festivals)Chocolate Eclair wrote:Really we should be thanking Hepzi. because it is blatently clear we would get to know nothing without her going out on a limb and informing us of events etc.
What irks me is negative comments that follow such posts from people complaining they never get this information, or it's too late etc - particularly from people who have the resources to gather that same information themselves just as easily as I. Considering many of these 'information' posts don't actually affect me as I neither live in Luxor or are there when the interesting things such as Film Festivals are taking place just makes it more irritating.

I would think that is why information is not always shared here.HEPZIBAH wrote: What irks me is negative comments that follow such posts from people complaining they never get this information, or it's too late etc - particularly from people who have the resources to gather that same information themselves just as easily as I.

Re: Consular meeting
I see that the UK in Egypt facebook page is open to non user for reading.
However posting the event the evening before the meeting is hardly adequate notice!
Also how would one know they have posted anything unless you were constantly checking their pages like a good little sycophant ??
I was quite happy with the regular email notifications until they decided to cancel them last year.
Sorry, feeling in a grumpy mood today.
This is in no way a a pop at Hepzi who does a great job trying to keep us informed

I quite agree about their lack of advance warning about the meeting and did comment on their page stating the same.BBLUX wrote:I see that the UK in Egypt facebook page is open to non user for reading.

With FB you can set up to get email alerts through to your designate FB email account. Something worth considering. That doesn't mean you get emails about every thing anyone ever posts but you should be able to be selective with it. I can't be precise on it as I can't remember the actual settings but if I managed to work it out it is not beyond the capabilities of anyone else.
Thank you BBLUX and I hope the grumpy mood soon leaves you.

Exactly! It is all very much down to personal management. Some things can sneak through on odd occasions but there are mechanisms for dealing with them too.Bombay wrote:The only stuff I get sent on FB are from FB"friends" or pages I have liked on FB and you can easily stop them.

Re: Consular meeting
Hepzi I am very grateful for your information and if I gave the impression that I thought YOU should have posted it earlier then I am sorry, I do have a facebook page a friend set it up some 5 years ago I never look at it dont know how to use it and certainly don't know how to set up "alerts" so from me a big thank you and please please keep letting me know what is happening.
