Are they interested?
I've just watched a programme on BBC2 about Ancient Egypt.
It was from "that" woman Joann Fletcher, and about Valley of the Kings. The tombs and lives of Ka and Merit.
I really like this woman! She presents "facts"in a sorta idiots guide (suits me fine!")
I've spoken to a lot of people in Luxor, even had dear friend who lived on West Bank(small village,Marise?El Maris?")
Dunno..don't care!
You know something?
None of them care about ancient Egyptology!
They've lived in Luxor and West Bank but have never visited the tombs or embraced their heritage. They reckon that "tourists"enjoy Luxor far more than they do!
Why?
Are they so used to it?Do the have different beliefs now, being of the Muslim faith?
Or is this a religion and culture that they are no longer interested in?
I'd really just like to know how many "modern"Egyptians are descended from the "ancients?"
Cos,most of them just ain't interested in the past!

Re: Are they interested?
Robbing then Carrie?
Just as interested in them then as Burke and Hare were in Scotland!
At least these Scottish grave robbers gave something back to society!
The corpses were transported to Edinburgh university and used in anatomy lessons.Much was learned from them!
Yes...it's still sick!
But...it's in the past, and there was a benefit to humankind!
And even today, people are still fascinated by the story.
Why is it not the same for people in Luxor/Egypt?

Re: Are they interested?
I once asked an Egyptian friend if he knew anything about the Temples and Tombs. He did not, other than 'the tourists like them'. I have since found out that the history taught in schools is 'post Nasser'.

Re: Are they interested?
You post such a wonderful set of questions here Scottishtourist, I shall answer just one for now, and that is, if you look very carefully at the tomb of a local sheikh who has died on the WB, in the past 20 years, the first thing you would notice, if you had any knowledge of the ancient tombs of the Nobles, up there on those hills, is that there is very little difference.

That's stretching it a bit.Scottishtourist wrote:Burke and Hare were in Scotland!

They robbed the bodies for cash, not out of some notion of serving humanity.
Those bodies could have been used for necrophilia, do you think they would have stopped if that was the case because it was not a noble enough use for them?

Re: Are they interested?
Yer it's the same here in London, if you are a local resi near the Tower of London, you get in for £1, where everyone else pays £25, though I've yet to come across anyone who has ever, yet it's the 2nd most visited place in London by international tourist.Zooropa wrote: I don't know whether they are interested or not but I guess they are no different to anywhere else.

A dear friend and her Egyptian husband visited London a couple of years ago, we went on a river cruise up the Thames, I pointed out what I believed are the important sites, like the Tower, Tower Bridge, Royal Festival Hall, (old) New Scotland Yard, etc. he had little or no interest in such things, though when he saw the new tall modern buildings like Canary Wharf, the 'Walkie Talkie', the 'Gurkin' and the Shard, he could not stop taking photos.
Modern tourism has moved on, in the past no one ever bothered with Tower Bridge, a simple look, probably from the Tower, but now world tourists MUST walk over it, and what with Jubilee Walk on the South Bank, these and other sites there are making it the future,.....best tourist attraction.
Perhaps it's more to do with present day advertising in feature films etc that are seen world-wide that attracts the tourist, but certainly as far as it's cultural sites are concerned, Egypt needs to look carefully at this.
Who knows a few episodes of Coronation Street, East Enders, dare I say it Neighbours or for that matter, Prisoner Cell Block H, filmed in Cairo and Luxor*, could probably have Lizzie hanging off Cairo Tower threatening to jump, if they don't give her some grog.
Well it's the best idea I can come up with.

* Spoilt for choice when it comes to character extras there these days, though I'm told they are getting a bit long in the tooth.

Actually, you've got a point A4 A long time, actually 1972-1973 there was a TV show called The Lotus Eaters. The story was about ex-pats living in Crete and their reason for being there.A-Four wrote:Yer it's the same here in London, if you are a local resi near the Tower of London, you get in for £1, where everyone else pays £25, though I've yet to come across anyone who has ever, yet it's the 2nd most visited place in London by international tourist.Zooropa wrote: I don't know whether they are interested or not but I guess they are no different to anywhere else.

It inspired a flood of tourism to the area and to the Mediterranean in general.

Re: Are they interested?
The Saudi students here were over the top about getting to see all the Christmas lights and went to quite a few of the local village events when all the lights were turned on at once with Christmas carols blaring.

Hardly inane, ZH who was then head of the SCA was rebuffed by JF and consequently lost her permit to work in Egypt just quoting facts..

Implies he made some kind of pass at her. The "official" line is that she got up his nose by going public with her "discovery" of the mummy of Nefertiti without consulting (and deferring) to his nibs. You know something else...?
Come on .....spill the beans....it won't go any further...

Only told to me by 'a not so little bird in the know, you know!....
A story. about 20 years ago a young American lady was interviewing Omar Sheriff in his apartments he being attired in smoking jacket, cravat and chilled champagne and this was at 9.30 in the morning.
The door burst open and 'the 'Cat in the Hat appeared to end the intended seduction.
The 'Cat or Prat in the Hat is still trying to do what Omar never succeeded in doing, much to my amusement and her *disappointment. That's *Omar and not Zahi....

Re: Are they interested?
A decree had been passed a couple months prior to her program airing that any discoveries had to be run past the SCA for approval before they were announced publicly. She did not do that before the program went on the air and so she got her permission yanked by the permanent committee of the SCA. Ignore anything Zahi claimed in the media at the time about her "incorrect' theories being the reason, that is the real reason she got banned. And she isn't the only one, but others were banned more discreetly and with less media fanfare. I know of at least one much bigger name that was banned for a year from archaeological work for the same reason and it was done so quietly no one even realized it happened.
As for "her" theory about Nefertiti, it actually wasn't even hers. She plagiarized the whole idea from an amateur named Marianne Luban, which had been posted publicly on the internet for several years prior.
