A friend wants to bring a second hand table top sewing machine (7kg value approx 70GBP) to her friend who resides in Luxor. She'll be flying into Luxor & is concerned about import taxes etc.
Any advice appreciated.

Re: Importing Sewing Machine
Last year I brought one through in my hand luggage with no problems, but then I wasn't stopped and asked to open my bag! I had previously asked in security at Gatwick and they said it was fine to carry it but may be advisable not to have any spare needles in my hand luggage. As for import taxes etc ................. I know nothing, sorry

Re: Importing Sewing Machine
I transported my used Bernina sewing machine and feather duvet as unaccompanied luggage as it was too heavy. Cairo Customs wanted to charge me le3000 taxes. The fee was renegotiated to le30 after about 2 hours.

Now that's what I call a good haggle. I defy any Egyptian to beat that score.SoukLady wrote:I transported my used Bernina sewing machine and feather duvet as unaccompanied luggage as it was too heavy. Fly EgyptAir, two bags, loads of space. Should be no problem.newcastle wrote:A friend wants to bring a second hand table top sewing machine (7kg value approx 70GBP) to her friend who resides in Luxor. She'll be flying into Luxor & is concerned about import taxes etc.

It's not a question of weight or space though. The question is on the possible import tax that could be levied - which is a concern for many people taking things into Egypt (or any other country come to that).Brian Yare wrote:Fly EgyptAir, two bags, loads of space. Re: Importing Sewing Machine
I remember years ago you had to declare all electrical equipment, no tax levied but you had to show that you took them home with you when you left, now no one seems to bother.
Someone I know bought a table top sewing machine here in Luxor, it was all singing all dancing type, did everyhting bar cut out the material for you. Never worked.
