A new discovery has been made at Armant Temple, 25 kilometres south of Luxor.

A mission from the French Institute for Oriental Studies (IFAO) unearthed a limestone head of the 18th dynasty king Amenhotep III, grandfather of king Tutankhamen.

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh El-Damaty told Ahram Online that the head was accidentally found during restoration and consolidation works carried out at the temple's foundations.

Aly El-Asfar, head of the Central Administration of Upper Egypt, told Ahram Online that the head is carved in sandstone and in very bad condition. The face is totally damaged but a part of the crown still exists. The head is now under restoration at the gallery of the IFAO in Luxor.

He continued that last year the mission unearthed five heads of royal priests within the temple. The heads are carved in limestone and each one has the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt on top. Each head is 50 centimetres high and could date back to the Middle Kingdom.

Armant temple was dedicated to worshipping the falcon-headed god of war Montu. It was originally built during the Old Kingdom but it was reused during the Ptolemaic period, although decorations and additions continued to be added centuries later by the Romans. Because of Montu's strong association with raging bulls, the temple was a major centre for the worship for bulls, containing many statues and reliefs of the animal. Most of these statues are now located in museums around the world.

Amenhotep III died at the end of his reign.

He couldn't talk.

Keep in mind that Amenhotep III was suffering from severe pain in the mouth which I can totally relate to.

I was born with Cold sores in my mouth and guess what side of my family I got it from; the maternal side of my family the same side that is connected to the Thutmosides. It passed from my mother onto me but none of my siblings aunt or uncle got it.

I get these cold sores in my mouth every month or two and sometimes they be so bad that I could barely speak. I know its not from not brushing my teeth because I brush my teeth twice a day. However I do have cavities ftom eating too much candy (I'm addicted don't judge me)

these sores has a emotional affect on me. When I get them they sometimes place me in a bad mood, makes me feel depressed, and makes me very upset I can only image what my ancestor was going through perhaps even worse than I'm going through.

The reason why stated all the above because I think it was the same scenario for my late ancestor. I don't think he was able to talk during the end of his reign.

With this being an issue I think Queen Tiye and her daughters stepped in to help thier aging and dying father in the court taking on his responsibilities since he could no longer do them by mouth.

Furthermore his marriage to his daughters were not sexual neither traditional but rather political.

The same can be said for Akhenaten who had both Neferneferuaten-Nefertiti and Smenkhareserve as Co-regents at the same time while he stood In the background throughout the end of his reign.

So Amenhotep III couldn't function in court the way he used to so his chief wife and eldest daughters Sitamun, Nebetnehut, Iset, and Hennutaneb helped him out. Leaving Akhenaten and Nebetah(Nefertiti) to also help up thus for Akhenaten to be crowned early as the next ruler of Egypt.

Mmm, im sure being the most powerful person on the earth which a leader of Egypt, especially in that period would probably have been, would have had one or two upsides to compensate.

As the old dictum goes, unlike love, herpes is forever and if it passed down the generations to Frater, 3500 years no less, then we have a remarkable example of this.

So old Amenhotep III had dodgy teeth......who didn't in those days?

I always thought that the Egyptians used pepper mint to clean their teeth.

But castle not everyone had a condition like Amenhotep III i''ve seen mummies with teeth in good condition.

I dont know where I got this stupid disease fron and I dont know where my mother got it from but its a pain I can barely talk now. It evolves from the lip to the mouth to the throat its painful.

I wonder if the old pharaoh died from diabetes?

Plus escima is really bad in my family one of my baby cousins had it so bad that it practically covered his skin but we love him so much.

My sister has had it and a few of my cousins.

I wonder how far did the abnormalities come from.
