It seems that urging muslims to forego the annual slaughter at Eid el Adha can get you into serious trouble :

Its the same on here newcastle, keep your gob shut, you receive no criticism. Keep your gob shut, you still receive criticism for keeping your gob shut. That's why they put the word gob in gobshite.

concerning some folk.

In my view it's another form of persecution and lack of tolerance towards others religion! In this case it's Islam.
Another "do-gooder"spouting opinions and showing ignorance and intolerance towards others faiths and beliefs!

The only ignorance I see here is your own.
There is no requirement in the Qur'an for the wholesale slaughter that accompanies Eid el Adha nowadays. It's a custom, followed blindly. and can reasonably be questioned as to whether it's appropriate in the 21st century.....which is all the writer was doing....questioning.
There are many other religiously-based customs that most islamic countries have curtailed, or abandoned....so why not this?
The writer who caused such "offence" is a muslim who I imagine knows far more about her faith & beliefs than you do.
She may be regretting her choice of words....but I see no fault in her motives.

They're slaughtering animals in the name of religion!
So what?
They're gonna get slaughtered one way or another for food!
Will you eat their meat?Or are you vegetarian?
So does it really matter when they get slaughtered?
For Eid or for general consumption by the public at any other time?
Why is there a big outcry about them being slaughtered for religious festivals..when no-one really bothers their arse about them being killed at any other time of the year?

Now that is a far more reasoned question!
Why we (well....some of us) are upset by ritual slaughter, but not by the wholesale farming & slaughter of animals for human consumption.
I'm not vegetarian, let alone vegan......and yet I am vigorously opposed to the darker aspects of meat production.
It's one of many issues where I'm 'conflicted' and on which i have no easy answer to my vegan friends.

P.s newcastle!
There is also no requirement in the Bible or Catechism for the wholesale slaughter of turkeys for Christmas!!
Why ain't you complaining about this, and telling me and others that it should be curtailed..or abandoned?
Just another wee point..as a Christian,I reckon I know more about my faith and belief, than you do!
The only ignorance I see here...is YOUR own!

Too many non sequiturs here to comment on.How did christianity creep into the debate??
If you'd read my previous post you might have gathered that I'm not entirely comfortable with the wholesale slaughter of any animals for human consumption.
I'm sure I can't match your encyclopedic of christianity (what am I saying?....of course I can!).....but turkeys have nothing to do with it.
At least the slaughter at Eid el Adha has some basis in the religious beliefs of muslims.

So long as the "slaughter" is humanely done, and the resulting meat is not wasted, I have no problems with these traditions.
But my local friends here on the WB in Luxor have not been able to afford a sheep to share with their neighbours since the revolution.

Duh..Christians also know the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of his son Isaac! newcastle.
Animal sacrifice, breaking of fast..bleedin turkeys have evrything to do with it!
Cos in Christian calender,Christmas Eve is a day of fasting and abstinence! No meat!!
So the slaughter of turkeys for meat on Christmas Day(at the very least!) has some basis in the religious beliefs of Christians!

I don't have a great issue with it myself BY....and the meat is certainly not wasted!!
As to whether the animals are humanely dispatched....the gazzar is usually pretty efficient and certainly no worse in comparison to what occurs in western abattoirs.
Whether we humans should be factory-farming at all is a relevant question.
My post was really more to do with the regrettable (in my view) silencing of criticism, or even comment, in Egypt today...whether it be on religious or political matters.
Sorry if ST rather hijacked the context.

Sorry if you feel I hijacked the context newcastle.
I don't believe I did!
You were wittering on about the unfairness of animals being culled in the name of religion, specifically Islam!
I merely tried to point out the similarities with Christianity and their festivals.
If you didn't read it that way..then my apologies...mea culpa!

Please don't use the word "also". Islam has a very different interpretation of this 'story'. In Islam it is recorded as a dream by Mohamed (i'e. a sura...not the Qur'an) representing the temptation by Satan to do something which would have been entirely abhorrent to God
Animal sacrifice, breaking of fast..bleedin turkeys have evrything to do with it!
Only in the last couple of centuries
Cos in Christian calender,Christmas Eve is a day of fasting and abstinence! No meat!!
That was eliminated in the Code of Canon |Law back in 1983
So the slaughter of turkeys for meat on Christmas Day(at the very least!) has some basis in the religious beliefs of Christians!
If you say so
Ignorance is bliss

Was I??
I thought I'd posted an article about a woman being accused of insulting islam. I don't recall proffering a view, in any substantial degree, on the legitimacy of her view...merely her right to express it.
It was you who took off on a flight of fancy regarding christian customs....which I'm more than happy to tear to shreds.

Really wish you'd tear to shreds some Islamic customs then!
Cos I'm sick and fed up with you knocking Christianity!
But as I've said before..we're an easy target for you!
You are living in Muslim country..so you just wouldn't dare..would you?
Thought not!
Big mouth..and small mind!

I have not the slightest interest in discussing islamic or christian customs other than with someone with a degree of intelligence, an understanding of the history of these religions.... and an open mind.
You do not fit any of these criteria.

How do you know the "slaughter"is humanely done Brian?
Did someone tell you it was? They'll tell you anything!
Or did you see the cull with your own eyes?
Did you witness the turkey you ate at Christmas being "humanely"killed?
I'd hazard a guess that you really don't give a **** whether these animals are humanely killed or not!
You're actually just saying what people want to hear and expressing an opinion that will endear you to a Muslim community!

My dear ST.....you'd do well to take Mark Twain's advice :
It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
