Massive Fire Engulfs Cairo’s International Conference Center

A massive fire has broken out at the Cairo International Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Photographs from the scene show huge billows of smoke rising over the Conference centre and Nasr City as fire-fighters struggle to contain the fire.

According to state media, at least 16 fire engines have been sent to contain the flames. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Cairo International Convention and Exhibition Center is the only comprehensive conference centre in the country and is built over 58,000 square meters.

Fire at Cairo International Conference Center, 16 injured

A large fire broke out on Wednesday at the Cairo International Conference Center in Nasr City, Cairo.

A Health Ministry spokesperson told CBC Extra on Wednesday that 16 people have been injured in the fire so far and have been transferred to the hospital.

The fire affected three halls at the center.

A security source said 21 fire trucks affiliated with the Civil Protection Agency, and 10 other trucks affiliated with the armed forces, headed to the scene in an attempt to put out the fire.

Three armed forces aircrafts flew over the scene in order to determine how big the fire was.

Head of East Cairo prosecution Mohamed Abdel Shafy said a team of prosecutors will investigate the cause of the fire.

Exhibitions and conferences are mainly held at the Cairo International Conference Center, following the demolition of adjacent buildings for exhibitions in the same area.
