Can't wait to see this gem....another classic performance from Maggie Smith, (following her outstanding performance in Marigold 2nd) and love the fact it is a true story :)

I love Maggie Smith. She is one of my all time favourite movie actresses.

Read the book years ago, hysterical.

Seems they found a good actor to play Bennett also.

Thanks for the info Jewel. :wi .

It is a completely true story by Alan Bennett..
The Lady in the Van was based on his experiences with a tramp called Miss Shepherd, who lived on Bennett's driveway in several dilapidated vans for more than fifteen years. A radio play of the same title was broadcast on 21 February 2009 on BBC Radio 4, with actress Maggie Smith reprising her role of Miss Shepherd and Alan Bennett playing himself. The work has also been published in book form. Alan Bennett adapted The Lady in the Van for the stage.

This is a review of the book.

This all sounds familiar to me but not from books or films. Did the lady die recently? Seem to think I read something in a news clip. (Equally, my mind could be playing tricks on me or it could be a coincidental similar tale.)

All I can tell you is that all this took place quite a few years ago when Alan Bennett lived in Camden, North London.
